Monthly IGR in Lagos now N34b, says commissioner (Nation)
Lagos State government said yesterday that it had achieved an average monthly Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N34 billion in 2018, compared to monthly averages of the last three years. Finance Commissioner Mr. Akinyemi Ashade, who disclosed this at the ongoing annual ministerial press briefing to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration, held at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja, attributed the gradual improvement to the impact of the ongoing reforms and growth in the state’s economy. He said: “Notably, we are recording gradual improvement in our average monthly IGR in 2018, compared to the levels achieved in previous years due to the impact of ongoing reforms and growth in the state’s economy. Based on our first quarter results, Lagos State has so far achieved an average monthly IGR of N34 billion in 2018 compared to monthly averages of N22b, N24b and N30b in 2015, 2016 and 2017.” Read more
Ambode charges traditional rulers to promote peace, security (Guardian)
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, yesterday urged traditional rulers to work towards ensuring peace and security in their communities. He enjoined the royal fathers, who he described as the custodians of culture and tradition, to be at the forefront of correcting anti-social behaviours in their domains. The governor also maintained that it was importance that they promote a peaceful atmosphere at all times, as it was necessary for development. Ambode, who spoke at the inauguration of the newly constituted Lagos State Council of obas and chiefs, said the traditional institution also plays a pivotal role in promoting the state’s tourism campaign as harbingers of culture and tradition. Rep wants employment for N-Power volunteers (Punch)
A member of the House of Representatives representing the Shomolu Federal Constituency, Wole Diya, has said N-Power volunteers across the country have been catalysts for growth in agriculture and other sectors since inauguration of the programme. He added that the volunteers deserved employment or empowerment. Speaking at an interactive session with N-Power volunteers in the Shomolu Local Government Area, Diya pointed out that the volunteers had contributed to efficient service delivery at all federal, state and local government institutions. He said, “For example in the Shomolu and Bariga areas of Lagos, the N-Power volunteers have been part of transfer of knowledge in schools, tax collection and production of food through the N-Agro section of the scheme. Eko Disco explains outage in Victoria Island (Nation)
Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) says the electricity outage in Victoria Island was caused by a breaker problem at Alagbon Transmission Substation in Lagos. Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communications, EKEDC, in a statement on Monday in Lagos, said the problem had put Ademola Injection substation out of power supply since morning. “As we speak 50 per cent of our customers in Victoria Island including Eko Hotel and Suites are in darkness,’’ the general said. Idemudia said that the engineers from the company were working hard to ensure the breaker was replaced. Read more
Lagos eyes 500,000 women for coding (Nation)
The Project Manager, CodeLagos, Mrs Banke Alawaye, has said the programme is planning to teach 500 women in Lagos about how to code by 2020. Speaking on the sideline of TechFest 2018 with “Spark Your Curiosity” as theme in Lagos, she said a partnership had already been signed to train 500,000 women out of the one million resident in the in the art of coding. Diamond Bank, in partnership with Deloitte, MTN, Interswitch, Microsoft and other tech giants including the Nigeria Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), organised the event designed to encourage youngsters with bankable ideas to showcase their talent . CodeLagos is an initiative to train one million Lagos residents how to code by 2020. Read more
Work begins on 30km Ikorodu-Sagamu road (Nation)
The Federal Government yesterday launched the repair of the 30.1 kilometre Ikorodu-Sagamu road. The road, a major link between Lagos and Ogun states, en route other states, has been in disrepair for over 12 years. The rehabilitation, estimated at N20.8 billion, is awarded to Messrs Arab Contractor O.A.O. Nigeria Ltd, with a duration of 36 months. The launch, performed by Minister of Power, Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Fashola, was witnessed by personalities, including Senator Gbenga Ashafa; federal lawmaker representing Ikorodu Central Mr. Jimi Benson; and Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Diaspora Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, among others. Food vendor in court for hitting neighbour’s scrotum with stick (Punch)
A 25-year-old food vendor, Kelechi Ugwu, who allegedly hit her neighbour with a stick on the scrotum during a fight over noise disturbance, on Tuesday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court. The accused, who was charged with assault, pleaded not guilty to the offence. The Prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, said Ugwu committed the offence on May 12, at 7 p.m. at the General Paint Area, Ajiwe Ajah, Lagos. He said that the accused hit her neighbour, Emeka Igwe, with a stick on the scrotrum causing him serious injury during a fight over noise disturbance. Read more

A pastor with the Ajagbandi branch of a white garment church, Prophet Dominic Daniel, has been arrested in connection with the death of a female worshipper in the church premises, weekend. Arrested alongside the prophet was the deceased’s lover, Ifeanyi Eyinna, who took her to the church for healing. The deceased, Ramat Audu, who lived with her lover at Iya Lekan Street in Shibiri area of Lagos, was rushed to the church by her lover when she fell ill. A prayer session was conducted during which the 34-year-old prophet administered some concoction to the ailing lady. She reportedly slumped in front of the church after taking the concoction. Mob rescues woman from suspected kidnappers, ritualists (Nation)
A mob yesterday rescued a 22-year-old woman, Abidemi Omoniyi, from a gang of suspected kidnappers, ritualists at Agege, Lagos. Omoniyi, a front desk officer at a hotel in Omole Phase I, boarded an unpainted taxi around 7am at Egbatedo Bus Stop enroute Pen Cinema. The woman, who said she started screaming as soon as she realised she joined a wrong vehicle, told reporters that the driver, Emeka Okeke his accomplices told her she would be taken to Ibadan where a customer was waiting to buy her vital organs. She said: “I had opted for the vehicle because there were too many people at the bus stop and no tricycle was going to Pen Cinema. So when the vehicle came and said the fare was N100, I just joined it. Read more

Zumratu Islamiyya Senior Secondary School, Yaba, Wesley Girls Senior High School, Herbert Macaulay Junior High School and Eletu Edibo Junior High School at the weekend emerged winners in the senior and junior boys and girls’ categories of the Opeifa Lagos Secondary Schools Handball Championship held at the Rowe Park Sports Centre in Yaba, Lagos. Zumratu Islamiyya thrashed Lagos City College, Yaba, 29-16 to win the senior boys’ category, while Wesley Girls defeated CMS Girls High School 12-5 in the senior girls’ cadre. In the junior boys’ division, Herbert Macaulay humbled Jibowu Junior High School 14-13, while Eletu Edibo girls defeated United Christian Junior Secondary School 2-1 to emerged winners. Read more
