More than 40,000 runners take to streets for 2019 London Marathon (Metro)

More than 40,000 people will today run the London Marathon as the annual event celebrates raising £1 billion.

Sir Andy Murray will fire the starting gun to kick of the 39th anniversary of the race.

Some 444,168 people applied in the ballot for a place – 7.3 per cent more than last year – while 42,000 are set to take part.

Runners have set themselves the target of breaking more than 80 Guinness World Records, including Sir Mo Farah aiming to beat his own. Read more
