More victims reporting domestic, sexual violence (Guardian)

A quarterly report of the Lagos Criminal Information System (LCIS) for the months of June to September 2018 disclosed that 56 miscellaneous cases (stealing-related offences), 95 sex offences, 79 robbery cases, 48 fatal motor accidents, and 35 homicide cases were received.

The report further stated that with respect to inmates charged for domestic and sexual offences, defilement took the lion share with 57 per cent; sodomy 22 per cent, while rape cases stood at 18 per cent. Read more

Falana faults INEC’s ban on campaigns before rescheduled election (Independent)

Prominent lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Sunday, criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission’s barring of campaign activities of political parties till the new date of elections.

Falana, in a statement, said political parties were by section 99 of the Electoral Act, allowed to campaign up till 24 hours to the election.

He said with the shifting of the election by one week, campaign period by political parties had shifted and would only end 24 hours to the election. Read more

Branch, in a two minutes video he shared on Instagram said it was baffling that the trucks could be taken away when President Muhammadu Buhari was going to visit Lagos days back, adding that since the president returned to his base, residents in Lagos have been left to face the traffic problem occasioned by trucks on the Lagos bridges. The reported killing of no less than 66 persons in eight settlements near Maro Gida village of Kajuru Local Government of Kaduna State has created tension in communities along the Kaduna- Kachia-road, Daily Trust on Sunday reports.

The Taraba State Government has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deliver free, fair and credible elections in the country.

The government made the appeal in a statement issued on Sunday, by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Bala Abu.

Eight rescued from flooded Zimbabwe gold mines (Tribune)

Eight miners have been rescued from two flooded mine shafts west of the Zimbabwean capital, Harare, officials have said, although dozens more miners are still missing and feared dead.

“So far we have managed to bring out eight miners alive and we are yet to assess and find any more people down there who are still alive,” Tapererwa Paswavaviri, the government deputy chief mining engineer told reporters on Saturday at the scene of the accident.

The rescued miners were whisked away by officials, while rescuers briefly stopped operations due to rain. Read more
