Police intercept dismissed soldier smuggling drugs in Lagos (Guardian)

It was end of the road for a dismissed soldier and his accomplice after operatives of the Lagos State police command apprehended two of them for transporting about 1,200kg of cannabis and other hard drugs.

The suspects, a dismissed soldier, identified as Okoliko Andrew, and his partner, Idowu Adebayo, were arrested with vehicles in which they were conveying loaded drugs before they were intercepted around Itowolo in Ikorodu area of the state.

The two men were said to have been initially stopped for driving through Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) corridor around Itowolo, an offence that contravenes the state traffic laws. However, it was gathered that upon further interrogation by the police operatives attached to the state’s Task Force team, the suspects who were parading themselves as uniformed men ran out of luck after it was discovered that they were smuggling substances. Family demands justice for driver allegedly killed with charmed ring (Guardian)

Family of Suliu Ambali, 45-year-old commercial bus driver, whose life was cut down in his prime by another neighbor, is demanding justice. The Kwara-born Ambali was punched with a ring allegedly laced with charm by a young man identified as Daduro Afefe at about 4:30p.m. on Sunday, May 24, at Okemorosun, off Magbon Town, Badagry in Lagos State.

Suliu, who went to work on the said day, had returned to join friends celebrating the Eid-el-Fitri. A call for help came shortly after his arrival, as a woman cried to the men that her aged husband was about being beaten by the said Afefe, a terror in the community.

Suliu and his friends rushed to rescue the man, who was identified as Baba Rotimi, a member of Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN). Unfortunately, Afefe who was said to be on a mission to kill, took out the ring, and aimed for Suliu, who had admonished him not to insult or attempt to beat Baba Rotimi. In reaction to his warning, he punched Suliu in the stomach, who died instantly, while Afefe, who knew the gravity of the offence he had committed, fled the area. Read more

Motorcyclists protesting ban beat Lagos guards to a pulp (Punch)

There was tension in the Zone 4 of the Lekki Peninsular Scheme 1 in Lagos State recently when no fewer than 50 motorcyclists protesting the ban on their operations stormed the area with weapons and injured four environmental guards and beat two of them to a pulp.

The battered guards were identified as Yusuf Adamu, Brown Robertson, Frank Onwudinjo and Caleb Onemine.

PUNCH Metro gathered during a visit to the area on Tuesday that the motorcyclists, who were identified as Goza boys from Borno State, protested against the actions of the Lekki Residents’ Association and its security outfit, as the enforcement of the ban had rendered them jobless. Read more

Police officers arrested for killing 17-year-old girl (Guardian)

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing of Tina Ezekwe, 17, allegedly killed by trigger-happy policemen.

Two Police officers suspected to have carried out the shooting was arrested and subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings.

According to Command’s spokesman, Bala Elkana: “If found culpable, they will be arraigned in court. They are Theophilus Otobo (ASP) and Oguntoba Olamigoke (Inspector) attached to Bariga Police Station.  Read more

Man stabs brother to death over soft drink (Punch)

One Chisom Eze has allegedly killed his 19-year-old brother, Henry, during a fight over a bottle of soft drink at their place of residence on Johnson Street, Alaba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that 21-year-old Chisom left the drink in the house and stepped out to attend to an issue, but when he returned, he discovered that Henry had taken advantage of his absence to consume the drink.

Angered by his brother’s action, Chisom was said to have grabbed a knife and stabbed Henry in the neck.

However, their sister, who allegedly witnessed the incident, raised the alarm and neighbours apprehended Chisom.

Efforts to rescue Henry were said to have proved abortive as he died of the injuries he sustained during the attack. Read more

RRS arrests singer, Salawa Abeni’s blackmailer (Guardian)

The operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested a 19-year-old National Diploma holder of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos as the brain behind the blackmail of Queen Salawa Abeni with half-nude photographs.

The suspect, Olufowoke Oladunjoye Emmanuel, a resident of Brentfield Avenue, Peace Estate, Magboro, Ogun State, was picked up by the Decoy Team of Rapid Response Squad last week Thursday after three days of trailing him.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu had in the wake of the attempt by an unknown individual to blackmail Alhaja Salawa Abeni sometime in April 2020, directed the Commander, Rapid Response Squad, DCP Olatunji Disu to fish out the suspect. Read more

Police inspector fires shots at colleagues, kills sergeant (DailyTrust) 

A police officer reportedly went berserk in Lagos and opened fire on his colleagues, and in the process killed a sergeant. It was learnt that the incident happened after a disagreement. The inspector identified as Monday Gabriel, has been arrested. The Police Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident, saying it happened on Sunday morning. 

He said the Inspector attempted to escape after the incident. Elkana identified the deceased Sergeant as Felix Okago, while adding that others escaped without injuries. Read more

Ex-oil firm engineer jailed for raping tenant’s niece (Punch)

Justice Adedayo Akintoye of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere, on Monday, sentenced a former ExxonMobil engineer, James Onuoha, to 15 years’ imprisonment for raping his tenant’s 14-year-old niece.

Onuoha was alleged to have on January 4, 2016, around 11.30am at No. 25 Samuel Amoore Street, Idowu Estate, Oke-Ira Nla, Ajah, Lagos, engaged in an unlawful sexual act with the victim without her consent.

Onuoha was first arraigned in January 2016 before the Igbosere Magistrates’ Court on four counts bordering on defilement and his case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

The matter was transferred to the high court for trial following the legal advice from the DPP.

The offences were said to be contrary to sections 134 (2) and 135 (1), and punishable under sections 137 and 258 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011. Read more

Police begin trial of two alleged killer cops who shot teenager (Guardian)

The Lagos State police command provost department has commenced a trial of two officers who allegedly killed 17-year-old Tina Ezekwe in Lagos last week. While Inspector Oguntola Olamigoke is now facing police orderly room trial, ASP Theophilus Otobo, as a senior officer has been served as an official query in line with police service commission’s rules.

It would be recalled that on May 29, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu, ordered an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Tina Ezekwe at Iyana-oworo area of Lagos. According to Lagos police spokesman, Bala Elkana, “investigations so far revealed that the conduct of the two police officers linked with the incident fell short of professional standards.

“In view of the above, the command has commenced internal disciplinary proceedings against the two officers. The ASP would be appearing before the Force Disciplinary Board sitting in Abuja and their recommended punishments would be forwarded to the Police Service Commission for approval.” Read more

Couple arrested for child abuse in Lagos (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating a couple for child abuse crime of a minor, Chidera who lives and works as houseboy with them.

The couple identified as Mr Franc Ifedili and Mrs Ifunnanya Ifedili were arrested by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Panti after the police received a petition from a human rights organisation, Paths of Peace Initiatives about the inhuman treatment meted out to the victim.

It was gathered that the couple who hail from Achi, in Orji LGA, Enugu state resides at no 2, Diran Alake Street, by Ogundele Street, Mafoluku, Oshodi are in the habit of bringing minors from villages to act as house boys and girls, subjecting them to all sorts of child abuse including corporal punishments and others. Tragedy looms: Security agents, NNPC asleep as pipeline vandals steal N16.5m fuel in Lagos‌ (Punch)

Residents of Fagba community in the Ifako/Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State fear a pipeline explosion is imminent in the area as vandals operate unhindered, stealing fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline. Residents of Fagba community, in the Ifako Ijaiye area of Lagos State, have lost their peace over the activities of pipeline vandals in the area.

The alleged connivance of security officials had also unsettled many landlords, who now fear for their lives.

Tina’s killing: Lagos command indicts two policemen (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command said on Monday that investigation into the killing of a teenager, Tina Ezekwe, revealed that the conduct of two police officers, Assistant Superintendent of Police Theophilus Otobo and Inspector Oguntoba Olamigoke, fell short of professional standards.

PUNCH Metro had reported that many Nigerians went on the social media on Friday to demand justice for Tina, who was allegedly killed by a trigger-happy policeman in the Iyana Oworo area of the state on Tuesday.

COVID-19 lockdown: Lagos court sentences 730 violators to community service (Tribune)

No fewer than 730 persons were sentenced to community service by Lagos State Magistrates’ Court for COVID-19 lockdown offences, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Director of Community Service, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Ms Shakirat Karimu-Ikotun, disclosed this to NAN in her office on Monday.

She spoke after receiving some Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the British Council Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme. Read more

Technician sentenced to death for beating his 62-year-old dad to death over will (Tribune)

An Ikeja Special Offences Court on Monday sentenced a technician, Rasak Abiona, to death for beating his 62-year-old father to death with an iron rod during a dispute over his will in Lagos.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo delivered the judgment in a virtual hearing.

Justice Taiwo held that though the prosecution had presented circumstantial evidence against the middle-aged defendant during the trial, the state proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

She noted that the technician’s confessional statements to the police implicated him and that during the trial, the defendant did not present witnesses in court to back his claim that his father died after a fall. Read more

Court jails driver 10 years over illicit drug importation (Guardian)

Justice Babs Kuewumi of the Federal High Court, Lagos State, yesterday sentenced a driver, Akinola Suleiman, to 10 years imprisonment for importing 11 kilogrammes of hard drugs. The judge convicted Suleiman following a nearly seven-year trial before two judges.

He said the convict’s jail term would run from August 30, 2013, when the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested him. The judge also ordered that the drugs seized from the convict be destroyed if there was no appeal against the judgment within the period stipulated by the law.

Suleiman, who plies the Ghana-Nigeria route, was found at the NDLEA checkpoint, Seme Border area, with 1.3kg of heroin neatly concealed in a big brown travel bag with false bottoms, hidden in a Toyota Camry car with registration number JJJ 584 AE Lagos. He was charged before Justice Okon Abang on November 6, 2013 on two counts of importation of 1.3 kilograms of heroin and 9.75 kilogrammes of Ephedrine, a substance similar to cocaine, heroine and LSD.
