Motorists want Lagos Government to reverse one-way rule on Charity-Ladipo service lane (Guardian)*‘Stop linking Osinbajo’s name with building collapse tragedy’ (Sun)

Lagos motorists, yesterday, denounced Lagos State Government’s one-way signage on Lagos roads, especially the one linking Ladipo International Spare parts Market from Charity Bus Stop.

The State Ministry of Transportation had in September, mounted barricades on the road, following the construction of Ladipo service lane, impeding motorists connecting Ladipo, Mushin, and environs from Lagos airport link-bridge.

The one-way signage was erected on August 23 without prior information, with Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force) officers reportedly extorting motorists and impounding vehicles in the area.

The signage was mounted for easy construction of the service lane, with the view that it would be reversed after completion. Read more

‘Stop linking Osinbajo’s name with building collapse tragedy’ (Sun)

Yoruba Leaders’ Forum (YLF) has warned people linking Vice President Yemi Osinbajo with the collapsed high rise building under construction in Ikoyi, Lagos to stop tarnishing his image as he has no link with the incident.

In a release signed by YLF coordinator, George Olufemi Ogunjimi, the group said it is sad that a good name is being dragged into the mud following the tragic and sad incident at the Ikoyi building site in lieu of 2023 politics.

“The vice president has categorically denied being the owner of the land or an investor in the collapsed building and searches have proven his assertion on the issue to be true,” the group said.

YLF explained though the late Femi Osibona shared the same ancestral heritage with Osinbajo, they were never business partners. Read more

ASF France rescues two victims of torture in Lagos (Guardian)

Avocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France), also known as Lawyers Without Borders, has successfully enforced the human rights of two victims of torture and arbitrary detention in Lagos State, by securing their unconditional release.

The action was in line with the group’s mandate of giving a voice to the defenceless through its Promoting the United Nations Convention Against Torture (ProCAT) project, which is aimed at ending torture in Nigeria.

Country Director of ASF France, Mrs. Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu, who confirmed the development, in a statement yesterday, said prior to ASF France’s intervention, one of the victims, Mr. A. Abiodun had spent over seven years in arbitrary detention with torture in Lagos State, while Mr. A. James had spent over one year in arbitrary detention after being tortured.

She stressed that although Nigeria ratified the United Nations Convention against Torture (UNCAT) in 2001 and enacted a law prohibiting torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatments at the end of 2017 (Anti-Torture Act 2017), there are many obstacles to its effective implementation. Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman push for federal legalisation of weed (USAToday)

Big cannabis companies are backing a new, celebrity-infused campaign to enlist marijuana users to pressure members of Congress to legalize pot nationwide.

Federal legalisation has advanced somewhat but still faces strong headwinds on Capitol Hill. The “Cannabis in Common” initiative launched Tuesday aims to change that – and it has nabbed actor Seth Rogen and comedian Sarah Silverman to push its message.

“Legalizing cannabis is long past due, and if we make enough noise, we can make it happen,” Rogen, co-founder of a cannabis company and enthusiastic user of the drug, says in a kickoff video.

Silverman voices another, animated promo. “Americans can’t agree on anything can we?” she asks. “Fortunately there is at least one thing most Americans have in common: more than two-thirds of us agree cannabis should be legalized and we have a real shot at getting federal legalization done now if we speak up.” Read more

Matthew McConaughey says he couldn’t mandate covid vaccine for Kids ‘Just Yet’ (TheWrap)

While appearing at the New York Times’ virtual conference, “DealBook Online Summit,” Matthew McConaughey once again teased his interest in running for governor of Texas. And perhaps coincidentally, the actor also went to great lengths to carve out some kind of perceived middle ground in the COVID-19 culture war.

Specifically, while McConaughey made clear more than once that he is vaccinated, he repeatedly emphasized that this was a choice he made, and also said that he wouldn’t mandate the COVID-19 vaccine for children “just yet.”

McConaughey, wearing sunglasses throughout the video chat, was there to discuss his upcoming book, “Greenlights: Your Journal, Your Journey,” with NY Times columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin. But the wide ranging discussion naturally gave him ample opportunity to at least suggest his ideological bona fides.

“People don’t want to be told what to do, don’t want to be legislated on what to do,” McConaughey said early on. “I think what some people get from my book is say hey, it’s a choice. We got choices. It’s not an obligation.” Read more

Sam Kerr is in red-hot form ahead of the Matildas’ friendly series against the USA this month, scoring twice and assisting two more as her Chelsea side demolished Swiss club Servette in the Champions League overnight.

Kerr’s first major involvement came in the 15th minute through a cheeky back-heel assist for strike partner Fran Kirby to put the Blues 2-0 ahead following Melanie Leupolz’s opener.

She then netted twice herself in the space of three minutes to make it 4-0. Two more goals to Kirby and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Jessie Fleming saw Chelsea go into half-time 6-0 in the lead. Kerr’s final assist came just after the break as Norway’s Guro Reiten made it seven.

Arsene Wenger names the Arsenal player he regretted selling the most (Metro)

Arsene Wenger is credited with having sold over 500 footballers during his time as Arsenal manager, but the legendary former Gunners boss has revealed that one particular departure stands out as being particularly painful.

The 72-year-old left the north London club in the summer of 2018 following 22 years at the helm, during which he helped turn Arsenal into a modern footballing superpower.

While the second half of his tenure, and the latter part of his reign in particular, was characterised by supporter unrest as Arsenal struggled to keep pace with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, the previous decade represented the most successful period the club had enjoyed since the 1930s.

Indeed, Wenger’s first full season in charge yielded a Premier League and FA Cup double as a side built around the famous back five, comprising stalwarts like Tony Adams and David Seaman, was complimented by exciting and often unheralded foreign imports. Read more
