Abbas Haruna, the Seaman allegedly detained for nearly six years following the directive of a senior officer in the Nigerian Navy, has regained his freedom.

Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliya, had during a popular Abuja-based radio station’s programme, Brekete Family, accused the military of unjustly detaining her husband since 2018.

Iliya accused a senior military officer, Brig. Gen. A.S. Adamu, of ordering her husband’s detention and torture. Read more

FG to toll Lagos-Ibadan expressway, second Niger bridge, others (Punch)

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has disclosed plans by the Federal Government to, upon completion of construction and renovation, toll the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and other major roads in the country.

Umahi disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during an inter-ministerial press briefing, as part of activities to mark Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.

“We have the Lagos-Ibadan (expressway), we are completing it and we are tolling it,” he said. Read more

Paramilitary: FG grants 35% recruitment slots to women (Vanguard)

As part of its determined efforts at gender mainstreaming, the Federal Government has set aside 35 percent of all recruitment slots into the paramilitary services under the Ministry of Interior.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed this at a special media parley on Friday in Abuja as part of events marking his first anniversary in office.

The services are the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, Nigeria Immigration Service NIS, Federal Fire Service FFS and the Nigeria Correctional Service NCoS. Read more

Court admits PIDOM to N5m bail (Tribune)

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, admitted Isaac Bristol, popularly known on his X handle as “PIDOM Nigeria,” to a N5 million bail with one surety in the like sum.

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling on his bail application moved by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, held that bail is a constitutional right.

Justice Nwite said he was inclined to grant Bristol bail except where there was reasonable ground to believe that the defendant might evade trial or attempt to destroy evidence. Read more

Pope Francis asked for forgiveness in Belgium for the Catholic church’s clergy abuse scandal and its poor response to it on Friday, but the country’s prime minister called for faith’s leadership to do more.

Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called for the Vatican to take “concrete steps” to address the abuse as Francis started a three-day trip to Belgium.

“Victims need to be heard. They need to be at the center. They have a right to the truth. Misdeeds need to be recognized,” De Croo said. Read more

A major new report, launched in response to a super-complaint against police lodged two years ago by the anti-stalking charity Suzy Lamplugh Trust (SLT) on behalf of the National Stalking Consortium, found “clear evidence” that victims were being let down.

In their super-complaint, the groups warned some victims were being left at risk of being seriously hurt or killed as they struggled to have their cases taken seriously. Read more

The former defence minister, 67, prevailed on Friday in a tight contest, defeating Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, 63, in a run-off after none of the nine candidates won a majority in the first round of voting earlier in the day.

The final count was 215-194.

Afghanistan: Taliban impose new restrictions on media (DW)

The Taliban recently imposed further restrictions on media organizations in Afghanistan, prohibiting criticism of their laws, policies and banning the broadcast of live political shows, according to Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC), an independent organization supporting the media and press freedom in Afghanistan.

The AFJC said the Taliban instructed media managers during a meeting on September 21 that the topics for political shows must be approved first by Taliban members.

The Taliban issued fresh guidelines instructing media organizations to only invite guests who are approved by the group. Read more 

Man United complete signing of Obi-Martin (Leadership)

Premier League giants Manchester United have completed the signing of Chido Obi-Martin after he left Arsenal.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, via The Sun, United have now received approval from the league to complete the deal for the 16-year-old.

This follows a five-step process with the Premier League before the transfer could be finalised.
