N100k bribe lands DSP in trouble (Vanguard)

One Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Popoola Kayode, leader of Taskforce team operating around Lekki Ajah area of Lagos State and his team members have been arrested for collecting N100,000 bribe.

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce), Head, Public Affairs Unit, Adebayo Taofiq said this in a statement on Sunday made available to newsmen in Lagos State.

Taofiq said that the bribe was paid by one Didi Ekanem, the owner of a Toyota Venza with registration number: APP 775 GJ who was caught driving against traffic (one-way) around Lekki Ajah Expressway.

According to him, the statement was necessitated in response to a story published on page 31 of the Sunday Punch Newspaper, dated Nov.22, 2020 with caption “Taskforce Commander Made Sexual Advances At Me – Didi Ekanem”. Read more

The management of Mainland Hospital, Lagos, says it received a directive from the state Ministry of Health not to release corpses of suspected #ENDSARS protesters.

Our correspondent visited the Mainland Hospital after the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Mrs. Mojisola Dada, via a public announcement, directed relatives who had lost loved ones between October 19th and 27thto visit the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital to identify and claim bodies of their loved ones.

The #ENDSARS protests had lasted between October 7th and 20th in Lagos and several other states of the federation. Read more

LASUCOM inducts 49 doctors, dental surgeons (Nation)

The Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) has been given the nod to conduct COVID-19 test by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The Acting Provost of the College, Prof. Abiodun Adewuya, said this weekend during the Induction of the 15th set of medical doctors/fifth set of dental surgeons in Ikeja.

He said the Molecular Laboratory of the College had been granted licence to operate and can conduct COVID-19 test and other tests.

Wth the latest induction of the 49 medical doctors and seven dental surgeons, LASUCOM has produced 858 medical personnel till date. Read more

Why Lagos disengaged isolation centre volunteer workers – Commissioner (Punch)

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, has given reasons for the disengagement of frontline volunteers who worked at some facilities where COVID-19 patients were being treated.

He said the workers’ disengagement was a routine practice.

Omotoso spoke in response to the disengaged workers’ allegation about non-payment of their two-month allowances.

The healthcare providers said they were frontline workers engaged by the Coalition Against COVID-19 to treat patients,in partnership with the Lagos State Government. Read more

The Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, on Sunday described the October 21 attack by hoodlums, masquerading as EndSARS protesters, on the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) headquarters as disastrous.

I am not against 13% derivation for oil bearing communities – Okowa (Sun)

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State on Sunday said he is not in any way against the clamour by oil-bearing communities to be given funds directly from the 13 per cent derivation fund.

Okowa said his wish is that the agitation to benefit from the fund should be holistic and collective, and targeted at getting the Federal Government to give oil-producing states more percentage of funds from the remaining 87 per cent still being kept and shared across the country.

The Nasarawa APC chairman kidnapped last night has been killed and dumped few meters away from his residence in Lafia metropolis.

Kidnapped ABU students regain freedom after N9m ransom (Nation)

Nine French language students of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria kidnapped last Sunday have been confirmed freed.

The nine students were on the way to Lagos for an immersion programme at the Nigerian French Language Village (NFLV) in Badagry when they came under attack by kidnappers along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.

Kaduna State Govermment confirmed two persons died during the incident and nine others rescued by security operatives. Read more

Ethiopia rejects Tigray conflict mediation talks (BBC)

The Ethiopian government will not talk with leaders of the northern Tigray region to end the conflict there, an aide to PM Abiy Ahmed has told the BBC.

“We don’t negotiate with criminals… We bring them to justice, not to the negotiating table,” said Mamo Mihretu.

African leaders have urged the government to meet Tigrayan leaders.

The conflict has reportedly killed hundreds and displaced thousands in recent weeks. The UN has warned it could trigger a humanitarian crisis.

On Friday, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his capacity as the African Union Chairperson, announced the appointment of three former presidents to lead talks to end the conflict. Read more

An Oregon man who was depressed over his failing marriage went to his family physician for help — only to learn the doc was having an affair with his wife, according to a new lawsuit.

The patient, 47-year-old Pierson Tone, is now seeking $2.9 million from longtime Bend, Ore., doctor Ronald Rosen in a lawsuit alleging professional negligence, The Bulletin of Bend reported.

“As a result of (Rosen’s) conduct, plaintiff sustained emotional distress including … the loss of his marriage and emotional and social destruction of his family,” states the suit, filed Monday in Deschutes County Circuit Court. Read more

California’s Covid curfew to begin, as US cases hit 12-million mark (BBC)

California has begun a night-time curfew, in an attempt to curb a surge in coronavirus cases.

The western state’s latest figures are now worse than the previous peak in August, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Across the US, the daily death toll linked to Covid-19 has passed 2,000 for the first time since May.

The country has now more than 12 million confirmed infections, with more than 255,000 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

This is by far the highest death toll in the world. Read more

China seeks to retrieve first Moon rocks since 1970s (BBC)

China is to make the first attempt to retrieve rocks from the Moon since the 1970s.

It is hoped the unmanned Chang’e-5 probe, to be launched on Tuesday, will bring back samples to help understand the Moon’s origin and formation.

The last mission of its kind, Luna 24, was by the Soviet Union in 1976.

If the latest probe is successful, China will become the third country to have retrieved lunar rock, after the US and the USSR. Read more
