N164m fraud: Defence closes case of company’s finance director (Punch)

The trial of the A&P Foods Limited Finance Director, Fidelis Umukoro, over alleged N164m fraud before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos State, has been concluded as the defence closed its case.

Umukoro was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 11, 2020 alongside Raremax Global Investments Limited, a company linked to him.

The defendant was charged with six counts bordering on conspiracy and stealing of N164,960,829.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges. Read more

Police arraign 3 for allegedly stealing N48.5m goods (Punch)

Three men have been arraigned before a magistrate’s court sitting at Ebute Metta, Lagos State, for allegedly breaking into a company and stealing goods estimated at N48.5m.

The defendants, Okoye Abuchi, 20; Kalu Friday, 42; and Kalu Godswill, 24, were arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

The charges read, “That you, Okoye Abuchi, Kalu Friday, and Kalu Godswill, and others now at large, on April 16, 2022, around 01.30am at Viramsum Company, Abimbola Way, Isolo, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit felony, to wit: breaking into a building, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

“That you did break into the warehouse and steal 192 bags of Resin raw materials, valued at N48,563,125, property of Viramsum Nigeria Limited, represented by Mr Rotimi Oseni, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 309(1)(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.” Read more

Lagos man in court for battering live-in lover

A 32-year-old man, Hassan Oluwadamilare, was on Friday arraigned before an Ebute Metta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly assaulting one Zainab Kareem.

Oluwadamilare was arraigned on one count of assault.

The charge read, “That you, Hassan Oluwadamilare, on May 12, 2022, around 9:36pm at 40A, Arikeowuyo Street, Orile, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did assault one Zainab Kareem by beating her with fist blows and inflicting injuries on her right eye.”

The prosecutor, Inspector Ejembi Adelowo, said the offence was punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015. Read more

Bloody rival cult clash leaves one dead in Badagry (Punch)

A fresh bloody clash between rival cult groups at Ganho compound in Badagry, Lagos, has resulted in the death of a 26-year-old man, Yusuf Tijani, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported.

A source told NAN that Tijani, identified as a member of Eiye confraternity, was shot dead by a group of six young boys aged between 20 and 25 years and belonging to a rival group; Aiye confraternity on May 12, around 6pm.

According to the source, the group chased Tijani to a compound in Ganho in Badagry, shot him thrice and fled the scene.

The source said, “The police from the Divisional Police Station, Badagry, promptly showed up when contacted but no one (suspect) was found. Read more

Lagos land grabbers kill four-year-old, father demands justice (Punch)

A father, Kazeem Rahman, has demanded justice after suspected land grabbers allegedly shot his four-year-old son, Abdulmalik, to death in the Eredo area of Epe, Lagos State.

Kazeem, a mechanic, also works part time for a businessman, Wahab Bello.

The mechanic on April 15, was said to have worked on a faulty vehicle owned by his client on the premises of the Olorode Hotel owned by Bello in the Ipoka area of Epe.

After repairing the vehicle, Kazeem said he and his son went for a test drive and he used the opportunity to visit a pig and fish farm he was managing for Bello. Read more

Change of counsel stalls Usifo Ataga case (Punch)

A change of defence counsel in the continuation of the trial of Chidinma Ojukwu, the murder suspect of the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, stalled proceedings on Thursday at the Lagos High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square.

Ojukwu is standing trial alongside her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and one Adedapo Quadri, on charges of murder, stealing and forgery.

During the trial, counsel for the third defendant, J. I. Osaigede, who stood in for Mr O. A. Ogunsanya, informed the court that the Office of the Public Defender was no longer representing Egbuchu, the third defendant.

Osaigede said the defendant had written to them that she no longer needed their services. Read more

School bus driver sentenced to life imprisonment for sexual assault of pupil (Independent)

Justice Abiola Soladoye of an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Mon­day sentenced a school bus driv­er, Tony Akpan, to life impris­onment for sexually assaulting a five-year-old pupil.

While delivering the judg­ment, Justice Soladoye held that the prosecution proved the charge of sexual assault against Akpan and his accomplice, Itoro Wilson, the school bus assistant.

The judge also sentenced Wil­son to two years’ imprisonment for assisting the convict to evade justice.

Justice Soladoye added that there was overwhelming evi­dence before the court. Read more

How we tried to save sound engineer murdered by okada men – Beer Barn (Independent)

The management of Beer Barn, the upscale leisure facility in the Lekki area of Lagos around which a sound engineer, David Sunday Imo, was burnt to death on 12 May 12, 2022 by irate com­mercial motorcyclists, has dis­closed the efforts it made to save the deceased from his assailants.

The disclosure was made in a statement released in Lagos on Monday.

The leisure facility said its staff had been told by three naval officers when trouble broke out that they were trying to resolve the dispute that led to the mob setting Imoh ablaze as well as its foiled attempt to kill his colleague, Philip Balogun, for allegedly using charm on a commercial motorcyclist who lost, but later regained consciousness.

Beer Barn stated that Imoh, a sound engineer with a live band it hired to provide musical en­tertainment for its patrons, was killed after the naval officers were unable to get the situation under control because of the intensity of the anger of the mob, which believed that the alleged victim of the charm had died. #ENDSARS: Residents applaud renovated police stations (Guardian)

Lagos residents have applauded the renovation of 20 police stations set ablaze by hoodlums during the EndSARS protest against police brutality in October 2020.

Some of these stations were vacated after the incident, while operations in others were carried out under canopies provided by individuals and Police Community Relations Committees (PCRC).

The affected police stations are in Orile, Amukoko, Layeni, Ilasamaja, Ikotun, Ajah, Igando, Elemoro, Makinde, Onipanu, Ebute-Ero, Pen Cinema, Isokoko and Alade.

Others are: Cele, Igbo-Elerin, Shibiri, Gbagada, Onilekere, Makoko, Daleko, Asahun, Makinyo, Amuwo-Odofin and the Anti-Kidnapping Station at Charly Boy Bus Stop. Read more

LAWMA renews clampdown on environmental offenders, arrests 65 (Guardian)

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has renewed offensive against environmental abuses, resulting in the arrest of 65 offenders, at various locations around the state.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Agency, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, revealed this during a chat in his office at Ijora, adding that the renewed offensive would spare no offender, as tough times awaits environmental offenders who willfully abuse the environment.

He noted that for too long LAWMA had pleaded with the public to shun deliberate actions, which deface the cityscape, but had very poor cooperation from a clear majority.

LAWMA boss reiterated the Agency’s total commitment to the cleanliness of every nook and cranny of the state, urging residents to imbibe the culture of effective waste management. Read more

Lagos Task Force to begin arrest of NURTW members collecting tolls on roads (Guardian)

The Lagos State Task Force, yesterday, said it will start arresting members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and others caught collecting tolls on the highways across the state.

It also warned against those displaying wares by the roadside, selling on Kerbs, illegal blocking of streets for social activities, pollution of the environment and indiscriminate parking of vehicles.

The agency further warned against the usage of unapproved buses and bus stops, street trading and illegal collection of fees on the highways, insisting that sanity must be restored no matter how long it takes.

Chairman, Lagos State Task Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Shola Jejeloye, who disclosed this, in a statement, yesterday, urged officers to carry out all-round operations in areas such as Iyana-Ipaja, Oshodi, Ikeja Along, Yaba, and other places,  where residents face heavy traffic logjam and hardship caused by traders, who display wares on the road and obstruct the easy passage of vehicles.

He said:  “It is worrisome to spend hours in traffic because of unauthorised displays of wares by traders on our roads. Read more

LASG to clamp down on street traders (Guardian)

The Lagos State Government on Sunday said serious steps were being taken to address street trading and other vices in the state.

The Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environmental Offences, CSP Shola Jejeloye stated this while addressing officers of the task force on the negative and harmful effects street trading was having on the state.

Jejeloye said officers would be deployed to carry out all-around operations in areas like Iyana-Ipaja, Oshodi, Ikeja Along, and Yaba amongst others.

He said residents of the state were being made to face unnecessary traffic jams and hardship caused by street trading. Read more

Nigerian develops app to help police, others tackle criminals (NewTelegraph)

A Nigerian, based in the US, Mr. Atai Albert has launched ClueGate mobile App that can help the police, military and other security agencies to track and locate criminals and their hideouts.

The Information and Technology expert, who disclosed this while addressing journalists in Lagos Tuesday, said the app is a multi-functional one where people can do blogging, hold conferences, stream, chat, video and also a marketplace where people can also sell their items.

According to him ‘Save our Soul’ is part of the app that helps police, the military and other security agencies to track and locate criminals’ hideouts, when they have it on their phones.

He said: The SOS is an emergency button in the app to send out alerts for people who need rescue during times of trouble. Read more
