Naira appreciates by 2.4% against dollar at official market (Vanguard)

The Naira on Tuesday appreciated at the official market, trading at N1,630.45 to the dollar.

Data from the official trading platform of the FMDQ showed that this represents a 2.40 per cent gain when compared to the previous trading date on Monday, when it exchanged at N1,670.65 to a dollar. 

Also, the total daily turnover increased to 242.59 million dollars on Tuesday up from 81.17 million dollars recorded on Monday. Read more

Sanwo-Olu sues EFCC to prevent planned arrest, prosecution (DailyTrust)

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged threat to arrest, detain and prosecute him after his tenure as governor.

Sanwo-Olu, through his lawyer, Darlington Ozurumba, filed the fundamental right enforcement suit before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

When the matter was called for mention on Tuesday, Ozurumba informed the court that he had withdrawn the earlier originating summons filed and replaced it with a new one. Read more

Biden thanks Tinubu for release of Binance executive Gambaryan — Minister (Channels)

President Joe Biden has called to thank President Bola Tinubu for the release of Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings who had been on trial in Nigeria for money laundering and currency speculations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar told journalists at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday that the two leaders also discussed areas of partnership and cooperation including the issue of security in Africa and in particular, West Africa.

Sanwo-Olu charges leaders on good governance, accountability (Punch)

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stated that leaders must prioritise good governance, uphold transparency and ensure accountability in all their actions to build a lasting and positive legacy.

The governor said this at the London Business School Worldwide Alumni Celebration 2024 Nigeria, themed ‘Building a Legacy in Nigeria: Turning Challenges into Opportunities’, held recently in Lagos.

According to the governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperative Stream and Investments, Mrs Folashade  Medeben, transparency and accountability are essential pillars, without which leadership cannot truly serve or uplift communities. Read more 

Court invites parents of 19-yr-old boy docked for cybercrime (ThisDay)

Justice Ayokunle Faji of a Federal High Court in Lagos, has ordered the appearance in court of the mother of a 19-year-old painter, Chinonso Udeh, charged with cybercrime.

The defendant was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on one-count bordering on cybercrime.

He pleaded guilty to the charge.

After his plea, the prosecutor, Mr S.I Suleiman, conducted a review of the facts of the case through a witness, Mr Abdulraman Mohammed, an operative with the commission. Read more

Appeal Court reserves judgment on ex-OAU student murder (Tribune)

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, Ondo state, on Tuesday, reserved in an appeal over the murder of a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Timothy Adegoke, filed by the owner of Hilton Hotel and Resort, Ile-Ife, Mr Ramon Adedoyin.

Adedoyin who was sentenced to death by an Osun State High Court, in Osogbo, over the killing of Adegoke in his hotel in Ile Ife, contested the ruling of the High Court.

The three-man jury, headed by Justice Olufemi Akeju, however, said the date for the judgement would be communicated to the two counsels, Femi Falana, and Kehinde Eleja, after both adopted their written addresses. Read more

Teri Garr, the comic actress and singer who brought her buoyant personality to “Young Frankenstein” and was Oscar-nominated for “Tootsie,” died on Tuesday in Los Angeles after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. She was 79.

An influential performer to comedians including Tina Fey, Garr was a familiar face in dozens of TV shows and films of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. The actress revealed in 2002 that she had been diagnosed with MS, and she suffered an aneurysm in 2006.

After starting her career as a dancer, Garr first gained attention as Inga, the saucy assistant in Mel Brooks’ 1974 “Young Frankenstein,” who greeted Gene Wilder’s Dr. Frederick Frankenstein with the memorable “Vould you like to have a roll in ze hay?” Read more

Plans to release Liam Payne‘s first posthumous single have been cancelled, only two days after they were announced.

The solo artist and former One Direction member died on October 16 following a fatal fall from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Argentine prosecutor’s office has revealed that the 31-year-old’s cause of death was due to multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding.

Last week, Grammy award-winning producer Sam Pounds, who worked with Payne shortly before his death, shared that he would be releasing a new song by the late singer on November 1. The song, titled ‘Do No Wrong’, was set to be released in three forms: the original, a live mix and an a cappella version. Read more

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Monday vowed he would stay in office, saying he would not allow a “political vacuum,” despite his party’s worst election result in 15 years.

Ishiba called Sunday’s snap election immediately after he took office on October 1. However, voters irked by a political funding scandal punished his Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has governed Japan nearly non-stop since 1955.

While projections showed the LDP-led coalition would likely lose its ruling majority, Ishiba raised the possibility that he could form a minority government.

“I want to fulfill my duty by protecting people’s lives, protecting Japan,” Ishiba told reporters. Read more

Iran on Monday executed 69-year-old German-Iranian Jamshid Sharmahd after years in captivity, media in the Islamic Republic said, sparking outrage in Germany and beyond.

Berlin called the execution a “scandal” and warned of “serious consequences” for Iran’s “inhumane regime”, while a Norway-based human rights group labelled the execution the “extrajudicial killing of a hostage”.

Sharmahd, a German citizen of Iranian descent and a US resident, was seized by Iranian authorities in 2020 while travelling through the United Arab Emirates, according to his family. Read more

PGA players council seeks smaller fields, fewer full tour spots (France24)

Smaller fields and fewer fully exempt players are among moves supported by the PGA Tour Player Advisory Council unveiled Tuesday to be voted on by the tour policy board next month.

After obtaining extensive feedback from PGA Tour players, the council made several recommendations for charges in a memo Tuesday that, if approved in a November 18 board meeting, would begin for the 2026 campaign.

The policy board approved a major review of field sizes in PGA Tour events in June and the suggestions come after an analysis of responses from players. Read more

Yankees fan ejected after trying to pry fly ball out of Mookie Betts’s glove (SI)

A New York Yankees fan who likely paid thousands of dollars for a front-row seat at Game 4 of the World Series has been ushered out of the ballpark after just three outs.

In the bottom of the first inning, Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball down the right-field line. Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts chased it down and caught it at the wall in foul territory.

After Betts caught the ball, a fan in the front row grabbed his glove with two hands and ripped the ball out of his possession. Fan interference was called, Torres was ruled out, and that fan was quickly ushered out of Yankee Stadium. Read more
