NASU, SSANU to commence nationwide protest, Monday (Tribune)

Following the recent breakdown of dialogue between the Ministers of Education and Labour, and the Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), the duo of the university-based unions have directed their teeming members across the country to mobilise for a nationwide protest.

The protest, according to a circular directed to all branch chairmen of the two unions and made available to the media in Abuja on Sunday, will commence on 8th July, 2024, across the state chapters of the federation, and a national protest in Abuja on 18th July. Read more

Lagos impounds 9,370 vehicles in 6 months (Leadership)

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 9,370 vehicles from January 2024 to June 2024 over alleged traffic violations.

The general manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the figure during a meeting with relevant stakeholders in the State’s transportation sector.

Bakare-Oki further disclosed that 3,034 private vehicles were impounded, including 1,849 cars, 549 buses, and 636 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), among others. Read more

Mother, daughter killed in Ogun gas explosion (Channels)

Two people, a mother, and her seven-year-old daughter, have been killed in a gas explosion at Ebute Road, Ibafo area of Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Police authorities in Ogun State identified the deceased mother as 40-year-old  Rafiat Sheriff.

The spokesperson of the command Omolola Odutola said Rafiat had instructed her daughter to cook their dinner when the incident occurred. Read more

A not-for-profit social organisation,Club Seventies Epe, has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to work towards improving the status of the annual Kayo-Kayo Festival in Epe to attract global recognition.

Kayo-Kayo Festival is an annual religious and cultural festival observed in commemoration of the arrival of King Kosoko and his warlords to Eko-Epe in 1851.

Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, says the legislative arm is considering passing a law to regulate alms begging in the state.

Two people were killed and 17 others were injured in a shooting at a block party in Detroit early Sunday morning.

Detroit police reported that a shooter opened fire at 2:25 a.m at a block party on the city’s east side, according to NBC affiliate WDIV. The Michigan State Police also confirmed two fatalities in a statement posted to X on Sunday.

Illegal Israeli immigrants to Palestine have begun construction of a road west of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank as they continue to set fires to Palestinian crops under the protection of the Israeli army.

The illegal immigrants, coming from Israel, are building the road on Palestinian-owned land in the village of Husan, the Palestinian News and Information Agency reported. Also known as WAFA, it is the official state-run news agency of the Palestinian National Authority.

Rami Hamamreh, the director of the Husan village council, told the news agency that illegal Israeli immigrants also began excavation of land near the Sidi Bo’az colony where settlers have been killing Palestinian farmers since at least 2017. Read more
