Navy arrests 3 officers, woman for ‘‘beating’’ civilian to death (Nation)

The Nigerian Navy (NN) has confirmed the arrest of three commissioned officers and a civilian woman over their alleged involvement in the assault of a Microbiologist, Iheanyi  Onumegbu, 33, at the NN Reference Hospital (NNRH) in Ojo, Lagos.

Onumegbu, a civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence attached to the naval hospital, was allegedly beaten by four naval personnel at the instance of the yet-to-be-named civilian woman, said to have constantly bullied him each time he went to check on the dog he was looking after for an officer on posting outside Lagos. 

The deceased, who would have clocked 34 years on May 22, was awarded the best junior civilian staff at the NNRH in 2019 and was loved by his bosses, and co-workers for being dutiful. Read more 

JAMB says 2024 UTME notification slip ready for printing (Channels)

The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) notification slip is ready for printing, according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs Fabian Benjamin confirmed the readiness of the notification slip which shows the candidates’ examination date, venue, and time.

“The 2024 UTME Notification Slip is ready for printing. All candidates who have registered for the exercise scheduled to commence on Friday, 19th April 2024, are hereby informed to start printing their Notification Slips for them to know the date, venue, time, and other vital information regarding the examination,” he said in a Thursday statement. Lagos State Government on Thursday reiterated its resolve to demolish buildings that fail its integrity test.

Police arrest 43 suspects in midnight raid (Punch)

Men of the Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad have carried out a comprehensive overnight operation resulting in the arrest of 43 suspects across black spots in Oshodi and its surroundings.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology under Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, is dead.

A source, close to the deceased, confirmed the death to Tribune online on Thursday.

O.J. Simpson, the former champion football running back turned actor who was acquitted in a sensational trial of charges he murdered his ex-wife and her boyfriend, died of cancer, his family confirmed. He was 76.

His family took to his official X account to write, “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. – The Simpson Family.”

Though Simpson was not found guilty of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, three years after his criminal trial he was found liable in a civil suit brought by the victims’ families. Read more

After taking on the plastic, fantastic world of Barbie Land, producer Margot Robbie is heading to the rich terrain of Monopoly.

Robbie’s company LuckyChap and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara are producing a live-action feature film based on the ubiquitous real estate-inspired board game. Hasbro Entertainment, the backers of Monopoly, will also produce.

Lionsgate extended its development rights to the board game with its purchase of eOne, which was completed in December 2023. According to the studio, Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game brand, with 99% global awareness. The Nigeria Premier Football League club owners association says “there are no complaints or problems” following reports that clubs were set for a showdown with the NPFL board over financial differences, The PUNCH reports.

The club owners were said to have planned a boycott of match-day 30 games billed for this weekend, over the non-disclosure of broadcast deals the NPFL signed with StarTimes and Propel Sports, as well as the fulfillment of financial commitments made at the start of the season.

Japanese jockey Fujioka dies following mid-race fall (BloodHorse)

Kota Fujioka, age 35, has died after suffering severe injuries in a mid-race fall at Hanshin April 6, the Japan Racing Association has announced. The grade 1-winning jockey, who won 803 races in Japan, sustained head and chest injuries after being unseated in the seventh race and died in a hospital. 

Veteran rider Yutaka Take said: “I have never felt this much pain and sadness. I can’t believe it. Going forward, I want to race with thoughts of Kota in my heart.”

Fujioka was twice successful at the top level, including when landing the 2009 NHK Mile Cup (G1) on Jo Cappuccino  at Tokyo Racecourse for Kazuya Nakatake. In November, he stepped in at short notice for Ryan Moore, who was ruled out after injuring his back in a fall, to partner Namur  in the Mile Championship at Kyoto. Read more
