Navy parades 5 Lagos stowaways, hands suspects over to Immigration (Punch)

The Nigerian Navy on Wednesday paraded no fewer than five stowaways arrested aboard a vessel, MSC Martha in Lagos.

The arrested stowaways are 44-year-old Effiong Okon, Ayewuni Daniel, 27, Ajagboma Asiko, 29, Adebanjo Ayewumi, 23 and 25-year-old Christian Joseph.

The stowaways were arrested by men of NNS Beecroft during a patrol on August 26.

The commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday. Read more

Man unleashes dog on policeman to evade arrest (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned a man, Gabriel Olayiwola, for allegedly unleashing his German shepherd dog on a police officer, ASP Oyagbola Jelili, at the Ikotun Egbe area of Lagos State.

The 30-year-old was arraigned before Magistrate O. Y. Adefope of a Magistrates’ Court in Yaba, on three counts of wilful damage of properties and threat to life.

Olayiwola was said to have unleashed the dog on the policeman who was at his residence on March 1, 2023, to arrest him after he damaged his co-tenant’s BMW X5 2013 model car valued at N3m during a disagreement. Read more

Lagos e-hailing driver remanded for robbing passengers (Punch)

A 29-year old e-hailing driver, Adeniran Jeremiah, was on Monday remanded at the Nigerian Correctional Service by an Ikeja Magistrate court sitting at Ogba for allegedly robbing his female passengers.

The court remanded him, pending legal advice from the Director of Public prosecution.

The defendant who was said to always decline male requests for rides was arrested while he was trying to purchase an item at Ikotun market after he was recognised by one of his former female victims. Read more

Court remands 4 suspected cultists for murder, arms possession (Punch)

A 21-year-old man, John Junior, was on Monday remanded at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre for the alleged murder of one Kehinde Sule on Apapa Road, in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

Junior was arraigned before Magistrate O. Y. Adefope of a Yaba Magistrates’ Court on five counts of murder, membership of an unlawful society and armed robbery.

According to the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, who held a brief for Chekwube Okeh, the defendant, a member of the Aiye Confraternity, and his co-cult members attacked Sule, popularly known as ‘Seigo’, by using an axe to stab him on the head and stomach. Read more

Fake LASTMA officer nabbed for towing vehicle (Punch)

A man identified as Adejumo, allegedly impersonating an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, has been arrested for towing a vehicle in Lagos.

PUNCH Metro gathered from a circulating video on social media that the suspect had driven a van with a LASTMA sticker on it and allegedly towed a car in the early hours of Monday in the Somolu area of Lagos.

In the video, a yet-to-be-identified woman, likely to be the owner of the towed black Acura MDX vehicle, was heard lamenting that her vehicle was stolen using a LASTMA van. Read more

Mob beats robbery suspect with toy gun to death (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified suspected armed robber has been beaten to death while attempting to rob a resident identified simply as Victor at Olugboso in the Agege area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Sunday that the incident happened on August 20 after the suspect broke into Victor’s apartment at midnight and attempted to rob him of his valuables with a toy gun.

While sensing that the gun was not real, Victor challenged him and engaged him in a fight. In the process, the armed hoodlum reached for a pair of scissors in his pocket and stabbed Victor. Read more

Police nab 3 vandals in Lagos, recover minibus (Punch)

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos Police Command have arrested three suspected vandals in the Tom Jones area of Lagos Island and recovered a minibus, two carts and bridge railings.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Hundeyin said the vandals were arrested around 2.45am on Saturday during RRS operatives’ routine patrol of the area. Read more

4 men arraigned for assault (Punch)

Four men were on Tuesday arraigned before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun of the Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State for allegedly assaulting and injuring one Abbass Raufu on his right shoulder with a gun over a disputed land.

The defendants, Kazeem Adenuga, Adeolu Ogunsanwo, Ahmed Adebayo and Moses Oluwasegun, were arraigned on five counts of assault, forcible entry and threat to life.

The prosecutor, Rita Momoh, said the defendants armed with weapons visited Raufu and used a gun to injure his right shoulder. Read more

Armed men rob motorists in Lagos gridlock (Punch)

A motorist, Samson Olanrewaju, has narrated his ordeals in the hands of cutlass and knife-wielding robbers who attacked him and robbed him of his belongings.

Olanrewaju, in an interview with PUNCH Metro, on Monday said the robbers numbering up to seven robbed him and other motorists in the Ido area, along the Third Mainland Bridge on Friday around 8.30pm.

Olanrewaju, who is the Deputy Chairman of the African Action Congress in the state, said, “I was coming back from work at Lekki, so I drove down the Third Mainland Bridge towards Ido, close to Ijora Olopa where the incident happened. There was light traffic. Those guys were robbing two cars ahead of me already. I couldn’t reverse because there was traffic. I immediately wound up the glass to at least protect myself. Read more 

Customs seize donkey genitals at Lagos airport (Punch)

The Murtala Muhammed Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said it intercepted male donkey genitals and dried shark fins worth N1.23bn at the Lagos Airport en route to China and Hong Kong respectively.

According to a statement on Thursday, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the command, Muhammed Yusuf, disclosed this while showing some of the seized contraband to journalists at the command.

Yusuf explained that the male donkey genitals were harvested from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, by a Chinese. Read more

Family faults release of Lagos chief’s suspected killer (Punch)

Family members of the Baale of Lotu Town, in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, Fatai Jubril, who was alleged to have been shot dead over a land dispute in the area on July 15, 2023, have raised concerns over the release of the prime suspect by the Zone 2 Police Command.

The prime suspect was said to have shot the deceased Lagos chief to death in the presence of his teenage daughter and wife.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in an interview with PUNCH Metro, adding that the police had launched a manhunt for the suspected killers. Read more

NDLEA raids drug warehouse in Lagos, recovers N4.8b worth of opioids (Channels)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Saturday seized multi-billion naira worth of illicit drugs at a warehouse tucked in the midst of the popular International Trade Fair Complex, Alaba, Ojo area of Lagos.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the media officer of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday.

According to Babafemi, 1.4 million (1,400,000) pills of tramadol 225 mg weighing 826 kgs; 3.2 million (3,200,000) pills of codeine with gross weight of 3,360kgs; and 2,841 cartons of codeine syrup containing 284,100 bottles with 28,410 litres of the psychoactive substance, with a combined street value of Four Billion Eight Hundred and Twenty Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N4,820,500,000) only were recovered from the warehouse owned by a wanted billionaire drug baron.

Navy arrests 10 suspected oil thieves in Lagos (Channels)

The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the arrest of 10 suspects attempting to steal crude from the sea in Lagos.

The commander of the NNS Beecroft, Commodore Kolawole Oguntuga, who spoke to journalists on Monday, stated that the suspected vandals were intercepted with tools meant to breach the pipelines and siphon fuel.

Personnel of the Nigerian Navy, NNS Beecroft, reportedly averted the theft at a single buoy mooring operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). Read more

Navy hands over suspect, seized drugs to NDLEA in Badagry (Nation)

The Forward Operating Base of Nigerian Navy, Badagry, on Tuesday handed over 13 sacks of cannabis sativa worth N5.5 million and one suspect to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Badagry.

Navy Capt. Adams-Aliu, the Commanding Officer, Forward Operating Base, Badagry, said the items were seized on Aug.24 and 27 at different places.

“On Aug.24, at about 10.00.p.m, the Base quick response team, acting on intelligence report, raided some hideouts at Ashipa, at the Seme border. Read more

Army investigates alleged killing of Lagos driver by soldiers (Leadership)

The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, on Sunday, said it has commenced an investigation into the alleged killing of a Lagos driver by its officers in Lagos State.

In a statement by the acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, he said the Division and the Lagos State Police Command were carrying out an investigation to unravel the identities of the suspects and the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

Lit.-Col. Ayeni, however, assured Lagosians that if the suspects were identified as serving Soldiers, they would be made to face the full wrath of both military and civil laws. Read more

Police arraign ‘‘Okada’’ rider for allegedly abducting Air Force officer (Guardian)

The Police on Wednesday arraigned a 27-year-old Okada rider (commercial motorcyclist), Mohammed Amine, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly abducting an Air Force officer.

The defendant of no fixed residential address is facing a two-count charge of abduction and breach of peace.

The prosecutor, ASP Clément Okuoimose, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 9 at about 9.40.p.m. in Badagry area of Lagos.

NDLEA launches manhunt for Lekki drug dealer (Tribune)

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a manhunt for a Lekki, Lagos-based notorious drug dealer, Sowunmi Ayodeji Kayode, who is now on the run after driving his luxury car to crush an officer of the Agency in his bid to escape arrest when operatives were on a search of his house last weekend.

The Director, Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Mr Femi Babafemi said, in a statement on Wednesday that, anti-narcotics officers of the Agency had on 18th August stormed the residence of the wanted drug dealer located at 2/3 Adetola Ayeni close, Lekki, Lagos for a search and possible arrest following credible intelligence that he was dealing in illicit drugs in his house.

Although he was not in the house when operatives got into his compound, he returned while a search of his apartment was ongoing. Read more
