NBA President, IGP lock horns over Prison Congestion (Independent)

Abubakar Mahmoud, president of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and Ibrahim Idris, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), are not in agreement on the state of prisons facilities in Nigeria, many of which are congested.
While Mahmoud lamented the deteriorating condition of prisons in Nigeria, Idris went on the defensive for the prisons managed by the Federal Government.
Mahmoud at the 5th Criminal Justice Reform Conference organised by Asaba NBA with the theme ‘Criminal Justice Reforms In Nigeria: The Journey So Far’ was worried that Nigeria’s justice system was near collapse, which informed criminal activities like killings, kidnappings, armed robberies and others leading to unstable system and the congestion of prisons.
He said the situation led to loss of confidence and anarchy in the system.
This, according to him, necessitates the reform to address the rule of law and the socio-economic development of the nation. Read more
