NBAWF condemns alleged killing of pregnant lawyer by husband (Punch)
The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum has condemned the alleged killing of a lawyer, Adaeze Ikpeama, by her husband, Anthony.
It was gathered that the six-month pregnant Adaeze was allegedly beaten by her husband at their residence in Lagos on Saturday, which made her to become unconscious.
Our correspondent learnt that Adaeze was rushed to a hospital, where she was placed on oxygen.
The deceased’s colleague, Chukwudi Iwuchukwu, who chronicled the incodent on his Facebook page, alleged that Anthony went to the hospital to remove the oxygen mask, which led to Adaeze suffering cardiac arrest and her eventual death. Read more
Lagos to demolish distressed building in Oshodi (Guardian)
The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), to achieve zero tolerance to building collapse, has issued another seven-day ultimatum to the owner and occupants of a dilapidated structure being used for commercial and residential purposes at No. 2 Brown Street, off Bolade Bus-Stop, Oshodi.
The agency had issued several quit and removal notices to the occupants and owners in the past, but the concerned people ignored such notices.
The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, stressed that the seven-day notice became necessary considering all the structural facts available to the agency after a thorough Structural Integrity/Stability Test (SIT), which was carried out on the building by a team of LASBCA experts and its sister agency, Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory. Councillors seal off suspended Surulere LG chairman’s office, appoint acting chairman (Tribune)
The Surulere Local Government Councillors have sealed off the office of the suspended council chairman, Mr Tajudeen Ajide, over alleged misappropriation of funds and abuse of office.
The legislators also appointed the Vice-Chairman, Mr. Sulaimon Yussuf as the acting chairman to prevent a vacuum in the administration of local government affairs.
The councillors hinted, through a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday, that they have also written to the Area C Police Command to intimate the command of their resolution. Read more
5 nabbed for stealing iron rods from Lagos Chinese firm (Punch)
Policemen attached to the Area ‘E’ Command of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested five suspects for allegedly stealing iron rods from a Chinese firm, China Construction Engineering Company, in the Iba area of the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspects, while conveying the stolen items to a destination in the state, were accosted by policemen around 3am on Sunday.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Tuesday that the suspects offered N500,000 bribe to the policemen, who rejected the offer, adding that the management of CCEC identified the stolen items to be the firm’s property after being contacted by the command.
Adejobi said, “Police operatives attached to the Area ‘E’ Command, Festac, Lagos State, on April 11, 2021, around 3am, accosted five suspects in a Ford bus with number plate, FST 679 XZ, with some 25mm iron rods, property of China Construction Engineering Company, between Volks bus stop and Iyana Iba, Lagos State. Campaign to alleviate mental effect of COVID-19 begins in Lagos (Guardian)
An enlightenment campaign to boost mental well-being of Lagos residents, particularly in the wake of some traumatising experiences, including COVID-19, has begun.
Underscoring the rationale for the project, wife of Lagos State governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said: “Mental health is so important, yet the awareness is abysmally low, thus necessitating a deliberate measure towards bringing to the front-burner the pertinent factors relating to mental illnesses in Nigeria.”
Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, a surgeon, who spoke, yesterday, at a press conference on the campaign, organised by Orunsii Wellcare Foundation, in collaboration with Office of the First Lady, in Alausa, quoted the World Health Organisation (WHO) ranking Nigeria to have Africa’s highest caseload of depression and being in the 15th position in global frequency of suicide. EFCC arrests ex-Imo Gov Okorocha (ThisDay)
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arrested a former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, in Abuja.

German grocery chain offers employees €50 voucher as COVID-19 ‘vaccination bonus’ (RT)
A chain of grocery stores in northern Germany has decided to encourage its employees to take a COVID-19 shot by offering those who voluntarily take the jab a shopping voucher worth €50 ($59).
Edeka Nord is one of the leading grocery retailers in northern Germany. The company that operates some 670 stores and employs around 4,400 people has decided to provide its workers with an additional incentive to vaccinate, as Germany struggles to contain yet another wave of the coronavirus pandemic.
Any staff member eligible for vaccination and who gets immunized can receive a reward, the company confirmed to the German media. However, Germany is currently vaccinating only the elderly, those with chronic lung diseases, as well as close contacts of pregnant women. It is unclear how many of Edeka Nord’s employees fall into these categories, but the company said it wants to “fulfill its duty of care as an employer and support the country’s vaccination strategy.” Read more

A White House statement said Biden “voiced our concerns over the sudden Russian military build-up in occupied Crimea and on Ukraine’s borders, and called on Russia to de-escalate tensions.”

The Ever Given megaship, which blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week, is being held until its owners pay for the damages, canal authorities said on Tuesday.
The Empire State Building-sized cargo ship has not been given clearance to leave the lake off of the canal where it was moved to.

Pentagon creates microchip that will detect Covid-19 under your skin (RT)
Medical researchers working for the Pentagon have claimed to have created a microchip that can identify viruses like Covid-19 if they are under your skin.
Retired Army Col. Dr. Matt Hepburn, an infectious disease physician, told ‘60 Minutes’ that the microchip acts like a “check engine” light for people, but does not track their every movement, which has been central to online conspiracy theories about Covid-19 vaccinations.
The technology was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which operates under the Pentagon. Hepburn’s interview was conducted on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, where last year over 1,200 crew members tested positive for Covid-19, something Hepburn claims this microchip could prevent in the future.
