Meanwhile,  another new mutated COVID strain has been identified in Germany. According to metro.co.uk, the mutation, which is different to new strains in the UK and South Africa, was first identified among 35 hospital patients in Bavaria.

It is not yet clear whether it is more infectious than previous variants of the virus, authorities have said. Samples of the virus are now being examined by experts at the Charité university hospital in Berlin.

Speaking during a press conference this week, the hospital’s deputy medical director Clemens Stockklausner said: ‘At the moment we have discovered a small point mutation. ‘It is absolutely not clear whether it will be of clinical relevance. We have to wait for the complete sequencing.’
