Nigeria’s COVID-19 cases surpassed 16,000 on Sunday. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the new figure in a late-night tweet on its official handle, bringing the total number to 16,085.
The NCDC listed Gombe State as having the highest number of reported cases for the day with 73 new infections, while Lagos State came second this time with 68 and Kano State recorded 46.
So far, 5,220 cases have been discharged and 420 deaths have occurred in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
New infections are still being recorded around the world with 230,000 cases in Africa.
The United States in the last 24 hours recorded at least 382 coronavirus-related deaths, bringing its death toll to 115,729, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The good news is that this is the lowest 24-hour toll in the US since it peaked in mid-April.
