NDLEA arrests pastor with 3 drums of ‘mkpuru mmiri’ imported from India (DailyTrust)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a trans-border drug dealer, Pastor Anietie Okon Effiong, with three drums of crystal methamphetamine, locally called Mkpuru Mmiri, believed to have been imported from India.

The consignment weighing 90kgs and loaded into a commercial bus with registration number RSH 691XC at Ojuelegba in Lagos was intercepted during a stop and search operation along Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene highway on Saturday.

Spokesman for the agency, Femi Babafemi, said the dangerous drug packed 30kg in each drum was meant for Pastor Effiong, who was arrested in a follow up operation at Oron beach in Oron.

The recovered Meth drums were meant for onward delivery to the Republic of Cameroon. Read more

Truck laden with 40ft container kills bystander in Lagos (DailyTrust)

The life of a bystander has been claimed in an auto crash which occurred in Lagos state. The accident which killed a male adult occurred by the Toll Gate inward Ajegunle.

Daily Trust gathered that the ghastly accident occurred due to the brake failure of an articulated truck laden with a 40ft container.

In a statement signed by the Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the articulated truck plunged into the canal while the driver sustained some injuries.

The statement read, “On arrival at the incident scene, an articulated truck laden with 40ft container was involved in an accident. Investigation conducted revealed the immediate cause of the incident was due to mechanical fault (brake failure). Read more 

500 level student commits suicide after taking hard drug in Abia (Vanguard)

A 500-level student of the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike, MOUAU, Abia State, identified as Modestus Hyacinth Egbulefu,has committed suicide after taking hard drug in Ikwuano council area ,Abia State.

Egbulefu, who is a student of the Department of Electrical/Electronic Engineering was said to have jumped from the 3 storey building identified as Groom Base Lodge,after allegedly taking some substances suspected to be ”Mkpulu mmiri.”

The incident which occurred at about 9:40am at the lodge as other students were shocked at the incident and tried in vain to revive him. Read more 

WARDC trains female traditional rulers, market leaders to tackle gender-based violence (Guardian)

The Women Advocate Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) on Sunday held a capacity building for female traditional rulers (Iyalode) and female market women (Iyalojas) in tackling and reducing sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls in Ondo State.

Speaking during the workshop in Akure, Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, the Executive Director of WARDC, said that the project was with a support from Ford Foundation.

Akiyode-Afolabi added that the project was implementing solidarity, acountability and commitments to ending violence against women and girls (SAC-VAWG) in the six South-West states in Nigeria: Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti.

She said that the project was to use available means in tackling sexual abuse and violence against women and girls in the geo-political region. Read more 

Terrorists attack 16 military bases in 18 months, kill 750 (Punch)

Terrorists on the rampage across the country have attacked about 16 military bases in the last 18 months, fuelling concerns that the military was overstretched and needed to restrategise to deal with the criminals, protect its personnel and tackle the security challenges.

Findings by Sunday PUNCH revealed that while some of the attacks led to the killing of soldiers, some were repelled and insurgents killed. It was also gathered that within the last couple of months, about 750 soldiers have been killed in different parts of the country.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) on Friday, described as unacceptable the volume of attacks on Nigerians, blaming some foreign elements for fuelling the country’s security situation.

Speaking in Abuja at the graduation of Course 30 of the National Defence College, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, the President said, “Government is deeply concerned about the activities of bandits and criminals who have reared their ugly heads in some parts of the country. Metuh condemns new tax proposed by state governors (Vanguard)

Former National Publicity Secretary of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh has strongly cautioned against the imposition of the new personal tax on Nigerians as reportedly proposed by State Governors.

The former PDP Spokesperson who posted on his verified Facebook handle on Sunday also demands an immediate ban on the purchase of luxury vehicles and all unnecessary foreign trips by government officials.

He also advocated a constitutional amendment to provide a six-year single term for elected office holders.

UTME mop-up exam costs JAMB over N100m – Oloyede (Punch)

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said the conduct of its 2022 mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination cost over N100m.

Speaking on Saturday while monitoring the conduct of the examination in some centres in Lagos, Oloyede explained that rewriting of the exam became a necessity for candidates who could not participate in the examination during the main exercise in May for various reasons and largely due to examination malpractice.

He added that over 42,000 candidates were participating in the examination in five states.

“Rewriting the examination has cost the board over N100m. The cancellation of the examination in the 10 centres affected, was carried out in the belief that the board is conscious of the fact that no matter how few, there are still some genuine candidates among them. Read more 

Horniman Museum to return 72 artefacts to Nigeria (BBC)

A London museum says it has agreed to return to Nigeria artefacts looted in the 19th Century from the Kingdom of Benin.

The Horniman Museum said ownership of 72 objects would be transferred to the Nigerian government.

Items include 12 brass plaques, known as Benin Bronzes, a brass cockerel and a key to the king’s palace.

It follows a request by Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) in January.

The museum, in south-east London, says it has consulted with community members, visitors, schoolchildren, academics, heritage professionals and artists based in Nigeria and the UK. Read more

4 cargo ships sail from Ukraine: Turkish, Ukrainian officials (AlJazeera)

Four ships carrying Ukrainian foodstuffs sailed from Ukrainian Black Sea ports as part of a deal to unblock the country’s sea exports, Ukrainian and Turkish officials said.

The four bulk carriers were loaded with almost 170,000 tonnes of corn and other foodstuffs, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA) said on Facebook on Sunday.

The resumption of grain exports is being overseen by a Joint Coordination Centre (JCC) in Istanbul, where Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish and United Nations personnel are working.

The UN and Turkey brokered the deal last month after UN warnings of possible outbreaks of famine in parts of the world due to a halt in grain shipments from Ukraine that had squeezed supplies and sent prices soaring. Read more 

Biden tests negative for Covid after ‘rebound’ case – doctor (BBC)

US President Joe Biden has tested negative for Covid-19 days after getting a second bout of the virus, his doctor says.

Mr Biden, 79, first tested positive for the virus more than two weeks ago.

He had been in isolation for a second time after getting what White House doctor Kevin O’Connor described as a “rebound” case.

2022 Commonwealth Games: Adekuoroye, Oborududu, others receive cash rewards for winning medals (Vanguard)

Another set of Team Nigeria athletes, mostly the wrestlers and the powerlifters, who won medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games received their cash rewards from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development on Saturday in Birmingham.

This is the second set of medal winning athletes and their coaches to be rewarded at the Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Games: Favour Ofili wins silver in women’s 200m (Vanguard)

Favour Ofili ran a time of 22.51 to win silver in the women’s 200m event at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

The 19 year old placed second behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah (22.02s Games record), the Tokyo Olympics double sprint champion.

Namibia’s Tokyo Olympics 200m silver medalist, Christine Mboma finished third in 22.80 seconds.
