NDLEA Intercepts N8bn Cocaine At Lagos Airport (DailyTrust)

A Brazil based suspected drug kingpin has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) who also intercepted 36 blocks of cocaine, weighing 27.95 kilogrammes with a street value of over N8bn at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

The suspect, Ejiofor Felix Enwereaku, was arrested at the airport on Friday 14 May 2021 “for importing 27.95kg of cocaine using their organised criminal gang, which specialises in tagging/planting drugs in innocent travellers’ luggage.”

Spokesman of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, said on Sunday in Abuja that based on intelligence, narcotic agents at the MMIA on Saturday 8 May 2021 intercepted a bag that arrived the Lagos airport from GRU, Brazil via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the Ethiopian airline with baggage tag No- ET331199 but was disclaimed by an arriving passenger on the flight.

The disclaimed bag was promptly secured by NDLEA operatives for investigation. Read more  

Driving against traffic: Lagos impounds 10 vehicles on International Airport Road (Vanguard)

Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) says it has impounded 10 vehicles on Muritala Mohammed International Airport Road for driving against traffic just as it has vowed to, henceforth, commence the arrest and prosecution of drivers of vehicles impounded for driving against traffic in addition to the forfeiture of such vehicles.

The number plates of the 10 impounded vehicles are: Sinotruck (LND 26 XW), Toyota Corolla (BDG 935 FY), A – Zebra (AGL 18 AH), Ford Limited (PF 3622 SPY), Toyota Matrix (KSF 15 DS), Highlander (LSD 01 GR), Toyota Hiace (GGE 506 XZ), Mini Bus (BDG 484 TC), Toyota Hilux (KJA 392 XT) and Toyota Hilux (AAA 987 ET).

The Chairman of the agency, CSP Shola Jejeloye, was leading his team on a routine enforcement of traffic law in the metropolis when he ran into some of the vehicles driving against traffic on Airport Road on Friday night.

Further waiting in the the area by the team led to the seizure of more vehicles bringing the total number to 10. Read more

Lagos Water Corporation urges residents to pay bills regularly (Guardian)

The Lagos Water Corporation has urged residents of the state to pay their water bills regularly to ensure effective service delivery.

Engr. Muminu Badmus, the corporation’s Managing Director, made the call in a statement in Lagos on Sunday.

Badmus said water supply had reasonably improved in the Iju area of the state, adding that it was the duty of the residents to pay their bills regularly.

The managing director said the improvement in service delivery was due to an increase in the production capacity of the Iju major water plant. Read more

Lagos Messy Flood: Lekki estate where rain water mixes with sewage water (Vanguard)

Residents of Lekki Gardens Ajah Phase 2, Lagos are lamenting what they described as infrastructural degradation at the estate.

The residents took to the streets, last week, in protest against the developer’s alleged failure to fulfill the promise of making the estate habitable.

When Sunday Vanguard visited the estate, our correspondent was shown water seeping out of leaking sewage in parts of the estate. Sewage water was everywhere and you could hardly walk without stepping on dirty water.

Speaking on the ordeal faced since relocating to the estate, the General Secretary of the Residents Association of Lekki Gardens, Dr. Awolola Eniola, recounted how efforts to contain the challenges met with a brick-wall. Read more

Borno Reps member sacks aide for celebrating Shekau as ‘true hero’ (Leadership)

A member of House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulkadir Rahis, representing Maiduguri Metropolitan Council of Borno State, has sacked one of his legislative aides, Bukar Kurama, popularly known as Tanda, for celebrating terrorist leader, Abubakar Shekau, describing him as a “true hero” for having the courage to take his own life, rather than surrendering during battle.

Tanda, who took on his Facebook page on Thursday to post his view on Shekau, wrote: “I admire and appreciate his (Shekau’s) courage to terminate his life. He lived a life of a hero and died a true hero. He did it in such a way that not even traces of his corpse will be found.”

‘Only 60,000 pilgrims will perform Hajj this year’ (DailyTrust)

The Saudi Ministry of Health has said only 60,000 local and international pilgrims will be allowed to perform this year’s holy pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

The information was contained in the ministry’s Tweeter handle “Haramain” which said those performing Hajj must be between the aged of 18-60 years, and must be in good health and had not been hospitalised in the past six month prior to the journey for Hajj.

Yoruba Nation: Akeredolu denies supporting Igboho (Nation)

Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has denied claims by Sunday Adeyemo also known as Sunday Igboho that he is in support of the agitation of a sovereign Yoruba nation.

Igboho was at the Ilana Omo Oodua rally in Akure, which he reportedly said Governor Akeredolu was in support of.

But the Governor in a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olabode, said it was erroneous for the secessionists to claim to have had his support for the rally.

Akeredolu noted his desire to acknowledge the right of individuals and groups to hold peaceful rally must not be misconstrued to mean support for secessionist agenda and or balkanization of the nation. Read more

Ogun to build agro-allied airport (DailyTrust)

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Wednesday, disclosed plans to establish an agro-allied based airport in the state to aid the development of the state as a destination of choice for agriculture.

Abiodun, who spoke during the inauguration of Agbeloba Aquaculture Hub in Owiwi, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state, said the agricultural sector remains the sure way out of poverty and unemployment ravaging the country.

The project is being promoted by a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said: “We are looking at having an agro-allied based airport from which agro produce like what we have here can be air freighted outside the country and still get to other destinations fresh.

Circus trainer mauled by lion in front of terrified children (Metro) 

This is the moment a lioness mauled a circus tamer during a show in Russia.  A video showed the lion attacking trainer Maxim Orlov during the Ural Travelling Circus performance on Saturday. Scared children and their parents rushed from the arena as the lioness twice clawed and sank her teeth into him.  Orlov and other circus staff managed to fend off the animal with poles but she still managed to cause injuries to the trainer. 

He suffered arm and leg wounds that required hospital treatment in Moshkovo, Novosibirsk region. Two lionesses – Vega and Santa – were seen brawling in the ring before the attack. Read more

DR Congo activates evacuation plan for Goma as lava from erupting volcano devours roads & houses (RT)

The Democratic Republic of Congo has initiated evacuation measures in the eastern city of Goma, which sits dangerously close to the erupting Mount Nyiragongo. The flowing lava has been destroying roads and houses on its path.

“The evacuation plan for the city of Goma has been activated,” Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya announced on Saturday as red-hot lava was making its way towards the eastern city of 670,000.

Before the official announcement, residents began grabbing their belongings and fleeing in panic, with some crossing into neighboring Rwanda. The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency reported that between 5,000 and 7,000 people arrived from Congo overnight. Read more

Damiano David: Eurovision winner denies taking drugs during event (BBC)

The lead singer of the Italian band who won the Eurovision Song Contest has denied taking drugs, following online speculation over competition footage showing him leaning over a table.

Måneskin’s Damiano David rejected the idea that he had been taking cocaine.

“I don’t use drugs. Please, guys. Don’t say that really, no cocaine,” he said at a press conference.

Måneskin, who had been favourites to win the contest, took the top prize with their song Zitti e buoni. Read more

Superman star Henry Cavill ‘in talks’ to star in Highlander remake (Metro) 

Superman and The Witcher star Henry Cavill is reportedly in talks to join the Highlander reboot in one of the lead roles. A Lionsgate project with Chad Stahelski – known for directing John Wick – at the helm, Highlander also had original producer of the first film Peter Davis on board before his death in February. And according to Deadline, Henry is eyeing up a part in this remake of the 1986 British fantasy action-adventure. Highlander starred Christopher Lambert, Bond icon Sean Connery (slightly improbably cast as an Egyptian) and antagonist Clancy Brown as immortal warriors, hunting each other down throughout time to wage war and gather more power. China ultramarathon: Severe weather kills 21 runners (BBC)

Twenty-one runners have died after extreme weather struck a long-distance race in north-western China.

High winds and freezing rain hit participants in the 100km (60-mile) ultramarathon in the Yellow River Stone Forest, a tourist site in Gansu province, on Saturday.

The race was halted when some of the 172 runners went missing, and a rescue operation was launched.

Many of the stranded runners reportedly suffered from hypothermia. Read more

The organisers of Glastonbury’s livestream event have apologised after technical issues saw many ticketholders unable to access the five-hour global event. Italy cable car fall: 8 dead after accident near Lake Maggiore (BBC)

At least eight people have died after a cable car fell on a mountain near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy on Sunday.

The accident happened on a service transporting passengers from the resort town of Stresa up the nearby Mottarone mountain in the region of Piedmont.

An image posted on social media by emergency services showed the wreckage of the car lying in a wooded area.

Officials say two children were taken from the scene to a paediatric hospital in Turin by helicopter. Read more

2-time Olympic medalist wrestler arrested in India after evading police over alleged killing of fellow grappler at stadium (RT)

India’s only wrestling world champion has been arrested in his homeland over the killing of a fellow wrestler at a stadium, with police catching up with him following a series of raids after he evaded their search for 20 days.

Celebrated wrestler Sushil Kumar, who is a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist and was world champion in Moscow in 2010, was present when Sagar Dhankhar, a 23-year-old ex-junior champion, was beaten to death at New Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium, according to police.

The son of a police constable died from the injuries he sustained in the assault at the setting known as the “cradle of Indian wrestling” earlier this month, leading to non-bailable warrants being issued against Kumar and six others over what authorities believe was a clash between rival wrestling gangs.

Kumar had approached a court seeking protection from arrest, claiming that the probe was biased and that none of the injuries from the fracas, which also saw two of Kumar’s friends hospitalized, had anything to do with him. Read more
