Nigeria hits highest-ever count for active COVID-19 cases after confirming 930 new infections in a day

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 930 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, the highest-ever count for active cases confirmed in a day for the most populous country in Africa.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency said there are now 75,062 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total number of 66,775 people it said, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the number of deaths so far is 1,200.

As of Wednesday, more than 74 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported worldwide, with more than 41.9 million cases considered recovered or resolved, according to a case-tracking tool maintained by Johns Hopkins University. The global death toll stood at more than 1.6 million.

According to a CBC update Wednesday, In Africa, the continent has seen more than 2.4 million confirmed cases and more than 57,000 deaths.

South Africa leads the continent on both counts, with more than 873,000 infections and more than 23,000 fatalities related to the virus.

Meanwhile, in Asia, South Korea has reported a record 1,078 cases — of which more than 770 are in the Seoul metropolitan area — as health officials face growing pressure to enforce stricter physical distancing to slow the spread in the capital.

Critics say the country let its guard down by easing physical distancing in October out of concerns about sluggish economic growth rates, despite warnings of a viral surge during the winter, when people spend longer hours indoors.
