Nigeria records 118 new COVID-19 cases as total number of confirmed cases rises to 61,558

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 118 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency, said there are now 61,558 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total number of 56,697 people it added, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the death toll keeps at 1,125.

Coronavirus cases have risen over the last few months in several regions of the world and infections worldwide exceeded 40 million.

According to the Johns Hopkins University, 40,033,859 infections have been confirmed worldwide, while 1,113,918 have so far died from the virus. While 323,530 new infections were recorded on Monday around the world,  3,888 died from the virus.

With over eight million confirmed infections, the US leads the pack followed by India with more than seven million confirmed infections and Brazil surpassing five million confirmed cases.

Meanwhile, Dr Michael Ryan of the World Health Organization’s health emergencies programme has said that ensuring that case contacts are quarantined for an appropriate time may help to break chains of transmission but can be hard to sustain with countries experiencing rising cases of COVID-19.
