Nigeria records 329 new cases of coronavirus

Nigeria’s death toll from the COVID-19 coronavirus has reached 973 just as the total confirmed cases of the infection has steadily climbed to 48,445.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Friday confirmed a total number of 329 new cases in the country via its Twitter handle. The figure, though high, is more than half the cases short of the highest daily number in the recent past.

It announced that 35,998 have so far recovered.

According to NCDC’s tweet, Lagos State, which has mostly been the epicentre of the virus since it was detected in the country on February 27, recorded the highest number of 113. The next figure is Kaduna’s 49 with a steady decline in the remaining states listed.

As of August 14, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 24,660. There are 1,084,687 confirmed infections and 780,076 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the global total of confirmed coronavirus cases is now more than 21 million. More than 762,000 people have died, while 13.1 million have recovered.
