Nigeria records 490 new COVID-19 cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Tuesday said Nigeria recorded 490 new cases of the novel coronavirus.

The new figures put total infections in the country at 17,148 with 5,623 persons discharged after treatment and 455 deaths, according to a tweet by the NCDC on its verified Twitter handle.

Lagos state recorded 142 new cases, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had 60.

Worldwide, Brazil’s coronavirus cases hit daily record with the South American country recording nearly 35,000 new cases.

Also, more than 8.1 million people have been confirmed to have the coronavirus around the world. Nearly four million have recovered, while more than 440,000 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The US has the most cases and deaths, followed by Brazil.

But there is a glimmer of hope as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and all of humanity welcomed news of the findings of a University of Oxford study that found dexamethasone, a widely available steroid, helped save the lives of people with severe COVID-19.
