Nigeria records 587 new cases of COVID-19 as total exceeds 17,000

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 587 new COVID-19 cases in the country.

Making the announcement Wednesday night via its Twitter handle, the NCDC listed the new total as 17,735. While 5,967 have been discharged from the isolation centres across the country after treatment, 469 have died.

Still the epicentre of the virus in Nigeria, Lagos State topped the number of confirmed cases with 155 new cases, Edo State recorded 75 new cases, the Federal Capital Territory reported 67, while Rivers got 65, Oyo 56 and Delta 50.

More than 8.3 million people have been confirmed to have the new coronavirus around the world. More than four million have recovered, while 447,000 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The United States has the most cases and deaths, followed by Brazil.
