Nigeria records 829 more COVID-19 cases and 1 death

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 829 new infections of COVID-19 Saturday.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency said there are now 83,576 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total number of 70,495 people it said, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the number of deaths so far is 1,247.

As of Saturday, more than 79.7 million coronavirus cases had been reported worldwide, with more than 44.9 million cases considered recovered or resolved, according to a running tally kept by Johns Hopkins University researchers. The global death toll stood at more than 1.7 million.

Coronavirus cases of new variant have appeared worldwide.

Accordin to the BBC, cases of the more contagious variant of COVID-19 first identified in the UK have been confirmed in several European countries as well as Canada and Japan.

Infections linked to people who arrived from the UK were reported in Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and France.

A couple found infected in Ontario, Canada, had no known travel history or high-risk contacts, officials say.

Japan is to ban most non-resident foreign nationals from entering the country for a month from Monday.

Since reporting infections in five passengers who had all arrived from the UK, the country has confirmed two more cases, one of which is said to have been domestically transmitted.
