Nigeria reports 1,398 COVID-19 cases, bringing total to 103,999

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 1398 new infections of COVID-19 Wednesday.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency said there are now 103,999 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total of 82,555 people it stated, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the number of deaths so far is 1,382.

As of Wednesday, more than 91.8 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported worldwide, with more than 50.7 million of those considered recovered or resolved, according to Johns Hopkins University’s COVID-19 case tracking tool. The global death toll stood at more than 1.9 million.

Meanwhile, Africa has secured 270 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.

According to the BBC, a provisional 270 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been secured by the African Union (AU) for distribution across the continent.

All of the doses will be used this year, promises current AU head South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This is on top of 600 million doses already secured but is still not enough to vaccinate the whole region.

There are fears that poorer countries globally will wait far longer than richer nations to be inoculated.

“As a result of our own efforts we have so far secured a commitment of a provisional amount of 270 million vaccines from three major suppliers: Pfizer, AstraZeneca (through Serum Institute of India) and Johnson & Johnson,” President Ramaphosa said on Wednesday.

At least 50 million of the doses will be available “for the crucial period of April to June 2021,” he said.
