Nigerian wins Best Director at world’s largest black film festival

Ogo Okpue, a UK-based Nigerian filmmaker, has won the Best Director award at the 2023 American Black Film Festival for his film A Song From The Dark

The American Black Film Festival is the largest black film festival in the world and is designed to showcase audio-visual works of black origin. A Song From The Dark also won the Best Actor category at the festival and had six nominations at the 2022 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in Nigeria, while winning Okpue, the Best Director for First Feature film at the last AMAA event.

The film features Nollywood’s Nse Ikpe Etim, Wale Ojo, Vanessa Vanderpuye, Dimeji Ewuoso, Garcia Brown, Lola Wayne, Yinka Awoni, Paul Coster, and others and is a fantasy-horror that highlights heroes and heroines of African traditional mysticism. 

This achievement is a significant milestone for the Nigerian entertainment industry and highlights the growing influence of Nigerian filmmakers on the global stage.
