Nigeria’s confirmed COVID-19 cases now 12,801

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 315 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number to 12,801.

The NCDC, which made this known via its verified Twitter handle Monday, June 8, also confirmed that seven more deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

So far, 4,040 cases have been discharged and 361 deaths have been recorded in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The new cases emanated from 14 states.

Meanwhile, Nigeria has carried out 80,000 tests in the 100 days since its index case was recorded, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has said.

The chairman PTF and Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, made this known during a briefing in Abuja Monday.

Mustapha said that the country also built its testing laboratory capacity from two to 30 with a laboratory in every geopolitical zone in the country, providing increased access to testing.

Also at the briefing, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, explained why schools must remain shut for now. The minister, who described as fake news timetables purportedly released from the Ministry of Education on the conduct of West African Examination Council examinations being circulated on the social media, maintained that only the PTF could approve the reopening of schools following expert advice on the safety of schools for the children, adding that government was not prepared to experiment with the lives of Nigerian children.
