Nigeria’s confirmed COVID-19 cases race towards 30,000

Nigeria’s confirmed cases of coronavirus will reach 30,000 in no time if the recent high trend continues. The daily tally by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has seen a steady rise particularly in June like in the rest of the world, when the numbers skyrocketed dangerously and stayed that way. For instance, the NCDC said in an update Monday night it recorded 575 new cases of the virus in the country.

Lagos recorded 123 cases, followed by FCT with 100, Delta-58, Edo-52, Ogun-42 and Katsina-24.

Others are: Bayelsa-23, Rivers-22, Borno-19, Plateau-18, Ondo-18, Oyo-17, Kwara-15, Osun-13, Enugu-9, Nasarawa-7, Abia-6, Cross River-5, Kaduna-3 and Ekiti-1.

The total confirmed cases in Nigeria now stands at 29,286 of which 11,828 have been discharged, while 654 have died from the infection.

Meanwhile, a group of more than 200 scientists are urging the World Health Organisation (WHO) to acknowledge that the coronavirus can spread in the air.

Nearly 11.6 million people around the world have now been diagnosed with COVID-19, and nearly 537,000 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The United States and Brazil have reported the most cases and the highest death tolls.
