Nigeria’s COVID-19 caseload grows by 150

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 150 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.

In a Twitter update via its verified handle, the government agency said there are now 62,521 confirmed cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus in Nigeria.

A total number of 58,249 people it added, have so far been discharged from hospital, while the death toll has risen to 1,141.

Coronavirus cases have risen over the last few months in several regions of the world and infections worldwide has exceeded 44 million.

A database maintained by Johns Hopkins University put the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases reported around the world since the pandemic began at more than 44.5 million as of Thursday morning, with more than 30 million of those listed as recovered. The death toll reported by the U.S.-based university stood at more than 1.1 million.

According to CBC news, the World Health Organization (WHO) said Thursday that the pandemic has reached an “alarming juncture” in the eastern Mediterranean, which for the WHO comprises 21 states and the Palestinian territories, with a total population of more than 580 million.

Rana Hajjeh, the WHO’s director of program management, said at a virtual news conference in Cairo on Thursday that there are three million confirmed cases in the region and the number of deaths has surpassed 75,000.

She said the region has recently seen the highest weekly number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
