Nigeria’s Covid-19 caseload now 55,829 as 197 new cases recorded

There have been 197 new cases of Covid-19 reported in Nigeria in the past 24 hours.

In an announcement via its Twitter handle, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said there are now 55,829 confirmed cases in the most populous country in Africa, with 43,810 the previously reported cases now recovered and discharged.

Nigeria’s death toll from the coronavirus has now risen to 1,075, after five more deaths were reported in the past day.

The NCDC made the announcement Thursday night.

Africa has recorded more than 1.3 million cases and over 30,000 deaths.

As of September 9, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 31,913. There are 1,322,452 confirmed infections and 1,059,892recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worldwide, the number of those diagnosed with COVID-19 is nearly 28 million. According to a count by Johns Hopkins University, more than 27.9 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the coronavirus and more than 906,000 have died, while 18.8 million people have recovered.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has reportedly called for an immediate “quantum leap” in funding to fight the new coronavirus six months after a pandemic was declared, and as at least 900,000 people were confirmed to have died of the disease.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged countries to find $15bn during the next three months to fund the ACT-Accelerator programme, a global collaboration to hunt for a vaccine and treatments led by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“Either we stand together or we will be doomed,” Guterres said, calling the virus the “number one global security threat”.

“We need a quantum leap in funding to increase the chances of a global solution to get the world moving, working and prospering again,” he said.
