NIMC to register UTME candidates in Abuja, Lagos, Kano on Saturday (Punch)

Candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in Abuja, Lagos and Kano will get another opportunity to obtain the National Identification Number on Saturday.

Possession of the NIN is a mandatory requirement for participation in the examination, which would start on Monday.

The National Identity Management Commission announced on its twitter handle on Friday that enrolment centres in Abuja, Lagos and Kano would open on Saturday to enrol UTME/DE candidates.

The tweet explained that only candidates for the examination would be registered in the three cities on Saturday. Read more

Alleged membership of unlawful society lands musician in court (DailyTrust)

A musician, Chimaobi Elele, was yesterday docked before a Yaba chief magistrate court in Lagos for alleged membership of an unlawful society and breach of the peace. Elele is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace and belonging to an unlawful society. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecutor, Sergeant Modupe Olaluwoye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some others still at large at 5.43pm on December 24, 2019 at the Ajegunle-Apapa area of Lagos.

Olaluwoye said that the defendant, who allegedly belonged to an unlawful cult group known as ‘Aiye’, and his accomplices fought and broke bottles, disturbed the peace of the neighbourhood and chased some church members holding a crusade. Read more

Court remands suspected killers of LASU student (Nation)

An Apomu Magistrates’ Court, Osun on Friday ordered that Pastor Philip Segun, Owolabi Adeeko and his mother, Bola who allegedly killed Favour Oladele, a final year student of Lagos State University, be remanded in a correctional facility.

The police charged Segun, Owolabi and Bola with two counts of murder and conspiracy.

Magistrate Faith Olukunle-Idowu, who did not take the plea of the defendants, ordered that they be remanded in an Ilesa Correctional Centre. Read more

The Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, says his counterparts have agreed to key into the community policing to tackle the security challenges facing the region. Governor Lalong said this on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while fielding questions from journalists after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the gunmen attack on Mangu Local Government Area (LGA) of his state which claimed 13 lives.  The governor said normalcy had been restored to the area as his prompt visit to the scene stopped reprisal attack that had already claimed three lives. Israel frees two Syrian prisoners after return of soldier missing since 1982 (Punch)

Two prisoners were on Friday released from Israeli detention months after Syria returned the remains of an Israeli soldier killed during a 1982 conflict between the countries.

According to Israeli media reports, the freed prisoners were Syrian citizens from Druze village in the Israel-controlled Golan Heights.

They were released before the end of their sentence.

Assault: Relations of patient beat, strip doctor naked (Nation)

Relations of a patient went wild in Abuja on Wednesday, beating up and stripping a female doctor naked following the death of the patient.

It is the latest in the series of assault of medical personnel in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), according to Dr. Roland Aigbovo, the President of FCT Association of Resident Doctors (ARD).

Aigbovo, in a statement in Abuja, decried the increasing rate at which the lives of medical personnel are being threatened by relations of patients in the FCT. Read more

Seven human skeletons found in woman’s house (Punch)

Authorities in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region have discovered seven skeletons inside a woman’s home, state media said on Friday.

The case came to light on Thursday when Dinh Van Phong, a resident in Tay Ninh province, told authorities that he found two human skeletons wrapped in a cloth bag beneath a shallow pond behind his house, Viet Nam News reported.

After being notified of the remains, local police sealed off the scene before searching surrounding areas.

They soon uncovered a further seven human skeletons, all of which were found in the house of Cao Thi Cam Van, 63, who lives next door to Dinh. Read more

A bank robber has been dubbed the ‘bad wig bandit’ after holding up his targets in a selection of hilarious hairpieces. The unidentified man has robbed three different banks in Charlotte, North Carolina, in recent weeks. On one occasion he donned a sharply-cut, honey-colored bob complete with rainbow print sweater. In another, the robber opted for thick, black corkscrew curls worn with a blue and black scarf. And a third extravagant look saw the bandit wear a long, red wig covering his face, with onlookers likening him to Wookie from Star Wars. Read more

Samira Ahmed wins BBC equal pay tribunal (BBC)

Presenter Samira Ahmed has won the employment tribunal she brought against the BBC in a dispute over equal pay.

Ahmed claimed she was underpaid for hosting audience feedback show Newswatch when compared with Jeremy Vine’s salary for Points of View.

The judgement said “her work on Newswatch was like Jeremy Vine’s work on Points of View under section 65(1) of the Equality Act 2010”.
