NLC insists on mass protest in Ogun today (Guardian)

The mass protests slated for Abeokuta, Ogun State will take place today as planned despite the threat of the State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, to disgrace the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress. Congress President, Ayuba Wabba, who stated this in Abuja, hinted that there is no going back on the protests.

NLC said it is protesting against the non-remittance of statutory deductions from workers’ salaries for pensions, cooperative, Sallah, Christmas amongst others over a period of 105 months. Congress also listed the non-utilisation of the last tranche of the Paris Club refund for the payment of gratuity for both state and local government workers since 2013 despite signing a collective bargaining agreement with organised labour in Ogun State.

Congress also alleged that the Ogun state equally refused to pay workers at the Tai Solarin College of Education salary arrears that has accumulated for the past 10 years and now grosses to a financial liability of about N9 billion. The Wabba-led NLC accused Governor Amosun of wrongfully sacking the Chairman of the NLC from his employment for standing firm in the defence of the rights of workers in Ogun State.

Wabba added: “The issues we have highlighted are too grievous to be swept under the carpet; therefore, the decision of the 12th National Delegates Conference of the NLC to confront and engage Governor Amosun will be carried out to the letter on Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Read more
