NLC strike: Police won’t tolerate violent protest — IGP warns (Tribune)

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has expressed concern over the proposed nationwide strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), warning that the Police will not tolerate any form of violence during the protest.

Recall that a few days ago, the NLC gave the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to reverse all perceived anti-poor policies or face an indefinite nationwide strike from August 2.

Reacting to the proposed industrial action by the NLC in an official statement made available on the Force’s Facebook page through the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP said that although the right to protest is enshrined in the constitution, but should be done in a peaceful way, devoid of violence. Tribunal reserves judgement in petition against Tinubu’s victory (DailyTrust)

The Presidential Election Petitions Court has reserved judgement in the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to challenge the outcome of the February 25 presidential election.

A five-member of justices led by Justice Haruna Tsammani said the date would be communicated to parties. 

Earlier, the court observed the adoption of final written addresses by parties in the petition against the victory of President Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Read more 

19 days counting, NMA protests colleague’s kidnap in Calabar (Guardian)

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Cross River chapter is protesting over the kidnap of it colleague, Prof. Ekanem Philip Ephraim who has been in captivity for the past 19 days.

She was kidnapped by unknown gunmen on July, 13, 2023 at her Clinic along Mountain of Fire and Miracle Ministries by Atimbo, in Calabar while attending to a patient.

Following this, NMA has down tool in federal, state and private hospitals across the state to protest for her release. Read more 

Lagos Police arrest land grabber, cultist (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Police Command has revealed that it arrested two criminal suspects-a cultist and land grabber-yesterday at the Alagbado area of the state.

The zonal Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Hauwa Idris Adamu, said: “On July 17, 2023, an intelligence report was received by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) of the Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, Ari Mohammed Ali, on some criminals who deal in hard drugs, involved in cultism, and receiving stolen property, by concern citizens.

“Based on the information and intelligence received by the AIG, a team of detectives from the Zonal Anti-kidnapping Unit immediately swung into action with the aid of modern technology, tracked and arrested two suspects, Falana Olamilekan, 40, and Aro Tomiwa, 41, in their hideout at Anikanle Kola Alagbado axis of Lagos State.  Read more 

Lagos lawmaker, Yishawu, commended for donating GCE forms to constituents (Independent)

Engr Gbolahan Yishawu, the lawmaker representing Eti-Osa constituency 02 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, has warmed himself into the cheery hearts of the of his constituency as he continues to receive applauses of appreciation for distributing free registration forms the candidates for the 2024 General Certificate of Education Examination (WASSCE Private Candidates).

The gesture, which is the 11th edition of GOY Free GCE Forms Distribution commenced on Monday, July 31 and it is slated to end by the end of August 2023.

2 arrested as demolition continues in Lagos community (Punch)

Two persons have reportedly been arrested on Tuesday, at the scene of demolition that is ongoing in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos.

One of the arrested persons, Ogunlami Opeyemi, shared a video of himself alongside another man in a vehicle of the Lagos State Task Force.

“We were arrested in connection to the incident going on at Oworonshoki. We are at Oshodi Oke at the moment,” Ogunlami said in a Facebook live video posted Tuesday morning. Read more

President Bola Tinubu has arrived in Cotonou, the capital city of Benin Republic.

The Nigerian Leader is in the country as the special guest of honour at the 63rd Independence anniversary of the West African nation, which borders Nigeria on the South.

4 Nigerians rescued in Brazil, survive 14 days on a ship’s rudder (Vanguard)

On their tenth day at sea, the four Nigerian stowaways crossing the Atlantic in a tiny space above the rudder of a cargo ship ran out of food and drink.

They survived another four days, according to their account, by drinking the sea water crashing just metres below them, before being rescued by Brazilian federal police in the southeastern port of Vitoria.

Ghanaian PhD student loses scholarship in the US after attack on LGBTQ community (AfricaNews)

A Ghanaian student in the United States of America, Derrick Boadi Sakyi, has had his scholarship withdrawn following his involvement in hateful attacks against LGBT Ghanaians on Twitter.

A Ghanaian LGBT activist known as Papa Kojo exposed the attacks after receiving a threat from Sakyi.

Papa Kojo’s search showed that Sakyi had just started a PhD program in Biological Science at Ohio University in the United States under a scholarship.

According to reports, the scholarship was meant for LGBTQIA+ community members, applicants from the Global South, first-generation students, and people with disabilities.Read more 

Rhino poaching declines in South Africa amid crackdown (DW)

South Africa recorded a slight decline in the number of rhinos killed for their horns in the first half of 2023, authorities said on Tuesday.

Poachers killed 231 rhinos in the first six months of the year compared to 259 in the same period last year, the Environment Ministry said.

That represents an 11% decrease nationwide. Read more

The fate of an American nurse and her daughter kidnapped in Haiti last week remains unknown Tuesday as the US State Department refused to say whether the abductors made demands.

Around 200 Haitians had marched in their nation’s capital Monday to show their anger over an abduction that’s another example of the worsening gang violence that has overtaken much of Port-au-Prince.

NASA loses contact with Voyager 2 spacecraft after mildly embarrassing case of human error (Sky)

After days of silence, NASA has heard back a spacecraft it lost contact with following a mildly embarrassing case of human error.

The space agency hadn’t heard a peep from Voyager 2 since last week, when flight commanders accidentally pinged across an incorrect command that saw it tilt its antenna away from Earth. 

But NASA’s collection of giant radio satellites around the world, known as the Deep Space Network, has now picked up a “heartbeat signal”. Read more

Josh Maja: West Brom sign ex-Sunderland, Fulham and Stoke striker (BBC)
