NLC threatens nationwide strike over further increase in fuel price (Nation)

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday said it would embark on strike if there is a further increase in the pump price of petroleum without the Federal Government addressing the consequences of the last two increases.

Labour said no notice would be given if its members wake up to a new pump price of petroleum. 

President of NLC Joe Ajaero said this during the African alliance of trade unions executives meeting in Abuja on Monday. Read more

BBNaija All-Stars contestant Princess has voiced her opinion that the All-Stars season would have been more enjoyable had it excluded the participants from the Season 7 “Level Up” instalment.

During one of her recent media interviews, Princess expressed her surprise at the inclusion of individuals from the 2022 Level Up season.

She believed their season was still quite fresh, and in her view, they should have been given additional time to fully develop their potential before being introduced into the All-Stars lineup. Read more

According to Sanwo-Olu, his visit to the hospitals was predicated on the need to see things for himself and ensure staff compliance with the health palliative scheme which covers the cost of normal pregnancy delivery, Caesarean section and antenatal care done in the state-owned hospitals. A former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Mohammed Lukman, has written an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, listing what he described as disturbing signals in the early months of his administration.

In the letter titled, “Disturbing Signals: Open Letter to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu” on Monday in Abuja, Lukman accused the President of imposing another Muslim-Muslim scenario on the party after winning the February 25 polls.

Army nabs 3 alleged railtrack vandals in Nasarawa (Vanguard)

Troops from 4 Special Forces of the Nigerian Army Doma, Nasarawa State, have arrested three suspects for railtrack vandalism at Kwarra community of Keana Local Government Area (LGA).

The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Special Forces Command, Doma, Maj. Joseph Afolasade, made the disclosure at a news briefing in Doma on Monday.

Afolasade said: “On Aug. 5, 2023 at about 11pm, troops of the command intercepted three suspected railtrack vandals during a routine patrol at Kwarra community of Keana LGA.

“The suspects were arrested with a large quantity of rail tracks loaded in one 18-tyre truck with Registration Number DED 364 YC.” Read more 

Cleaner bags 6 months jail for stealing JAMB’s laptop (Independent)

A Magistrate Court 2 sitting in Kado- Life Camp, Abuja, has jailed a contract staff with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for six months for stealing an HP laptop belonging to the Board.

According to the charge sheet read to the defendant, Emmanuel Odey, who was alleged to have committed the crime on Thursday, 13th July, 2023, at the Board’s FCT Zonal Office, Abuja, contrary to Section 287-289 of the Penal Code and punishable under the same section.

Odey, a cleaner employed for cleaning services at the Board’s FCT Zonal Office, broke down in tears and admitted before the court to stealing the HP laptop worth three hundred and fifty thousand naira (N350,000) to pay his house rent that has expired. Read more

Timbaland’s music collaborator and famous rapper Magoo has reportedly passed away at age 50. The duo produced some of the most successful hip hop music during their time together.

Fans swarmed on social media to pay tribute to Magoo after reports of the rapper’s death surfaced. Recording artist Smoke E. Digglera and Digital Black of the hip-hop group Playa was the first to report the Virginia native musician’s passing. Both musicians took to their respective Instagram accounts to mourn the star. Hans Zimmer becomes new co-owner after buying BBC’s Maida Vale Studios (Sky)

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer has bought the BBC’s iconic Maida Vale Studios in London in a partnership with three film producers.

The venue, which the BBC had owned since 1933, has played host to the likes of David Bowie, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Beyonce, as well as being the home of performing groups such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

The site, in northwest London, went on sale for around £10m but the corporation would not confirm if it sold for that. A spokesperson told Sky News they had secured a “good deal”.  Read more

Austin Butler has shared advice he received from his Elvis co-star Tom Hanks to save him from “emotional whiplash”.

A windmill that was the location of Caractacus Pott’s home in the Hollywood hit 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has gone up for sale for the first time in 35 years.

Painted with a classic black base, cap and sails, the Cobstone Windmill in Ibstone, Buckinghamshire, overlooks the beautiful village of Turville.

Niger’s military junta has announced plans to prosecute deposed President Mohamed Bazoum for high treason and undermining national security.

This is the latest sign that the junta intends to resist international pressure to return power to Mr Bazoum.

Neymar set to join Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal after PSG agree deal (AlJazeera)

Brazil forward Neymar is headed for Saudi Arabia after Pro League side Al Hilal agreed a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Saudi state media has reported.

There was no immediate comment from the Ligue 1 champions, owned by Qatar Sports Investments, but French newspaper L’Equipe said the deal could net 31-year-old Neymar 160 million euros ($175m).

The transfer fee was reported to be about 90 million euros ($98m) plus add-ons and subject to completing a medical. Read more

Celtic player Alexandro Bernabei fined for drink driving (BBC)

Celtic footballer Alexandro Bernabei has been fined after pleading guilty to drink driving.

Bernabei, 22, was fined £1,875 after he was found to be more than twice over the limit.

The Argentine defender was arrested and charged in August 2022 after police were called over an incident in Glasgow city centre.

Bernabei was an unused substitute as Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-1 at Pittodrie at the weekend. Read more

Andy Murray has been restored to Great Britain’s Davis Cup team as they take on Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester next month.

Two days after it was reported that the Philadelphia 76ers ended trade talks involving  James Harden, the 10-time All-Star guard ripped 76ers president Daryl Morey.

“Daryl Morey is a liar and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of,” Harden said during an Adidas media event in China. “Let me say that again: Daryl Morey is a liar and I will never be a part of an organization that he’s a part of.”

On Saturday, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the 76ers planned to bring Harden back to training camp and for the start of the season, setting up an uncomfortable situation with the unhappy star. Read more
