Nigeria LNG Limited concluded another successful edition of its annual capacity-building workshop, #NLNGChangeYourStory, aimed at equipping women journalists with advanced digital communication and social media skills.

The three-day workshop, themed “Gender Active,” took place from January 30th to February 1st, 2024, in Lagos, gathering 26 women journalists from various editorial backgrounds and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).

Sponsored by NLNG, the workshop focused on mobile and multimedia journalism, providing participants with comprehensive training to navigate the evolving landscape of digital communication effectively. Mr. Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, emphasised the company’s commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusiveness, both internally and externally. He underscored the pivotal role of women journalists in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion, stating, “Our dedication to capacity building stems from the belief in the immense potential of women journalists.”

Mr. Odeh highlighted the workshop’s significance in empowering women journalists with essential skills tailored to the dynamic digital age. The #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop, initiated in 2015, reflects NLNG’s vision of leveraging new technologies and platforms to articulate narratives that resonate in today’s fast-paced digital era.

National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Aisha Bura Ibrahim, commended NLNG for supporting women journalists with digital communication skills, positioning them to report the realities of women and children in Nigeria effectively. She emphasized the importance of equipping journalists for the future, especially in addressing issues concerning women and children, including the girl-child.

Facilitated by seasoned journalist Mr. Dan Mason in collaboration with The Journalism Clinic led by Mr. Taiwo Obe, the workshop provided participants with transformative learning experiences. Through expert guidance, journalists were empowered to harness digital communication and social media platforms effectively, enabling them to shape narratives and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s discourse.

Since its inception in 2015, the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop has benefitted over 90 journalists, reinforcing their digital communication and social media competencies. The workshop serves as a testament to the transformative power of state-of-the-art training, equipping journalists with the confidence and skills needed to thrive in the digital age.

The success of the workshop underscores NLNG’s commitment to empowering women journalists and fostering a more inclusive and diverse media landscape in Nigeria.
