NLNG says it supplies nearly half a million metric tons of LPG to Nigerian market annually

Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has reaffirmed its commitment to supplying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to the Nigerian domestic market, clarifying recent reports regarding its contributions. Contrary to claims of supplying 1.5 million metric tons of LPG annually, NLNG stated that it annually provides close to 500,000 metric tons to meet market demands.

NLNG has been dedicated to delivering 100% of its LPG production to the domestic market since 2022, following a decision by the Company’s Board of Directors. In 2023, NLNG supplied 493,000 metric tons of LPG to the domestic market, maintaining its pivotal role in meeting approximately 30% of the total LPG demand in the country.

This consistent supply not only promotes cleaner cooking fuel but also contributes to reducing gas flaring in Nigeria, aligning with broader environmental and public health goals. NLNG’s efforts extend beyond mere supply, as the company actively encourages increased gas utilisation and advocates for the use of clean gas for cooking to mitigate health risks associated with traditional firewood usage.

Furthermore, NLNG’s involvement in the LPG sector has facilitated the entry of more stakeholders into the value chain and spurred investments in infrastructure development, fostering sectoral growth. This strategic endeavour has not only bolstered the availability, accessibility, and affordability of cooking gas but has also generated additional employment and business opportunities in Nigeria.

Andy Odeh, General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG in a post on the company’s X handle, emphasised the Company’s unwavering commitment to promoting clean energy and contributing to a better Nigeria through its LPG initiatives. NLNG, he stated, remains dedicated to its mission of supplying LPG to the domestic market while championing sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
