Dangote Group has refuted claims that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has begun lifting petrol from its refinery. This comes in response to a headline published in BusinessDay Newspapers on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, which stated, “NNPC lifts Dangote Petrol, sells at N897 per litre.”
Anthony Chiejina, Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer for Dangote, issued a press statement categorically denying these claims. “We would like to state that NNPC has not commenced lifting of refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, from our Dangote Petroleum Refinery,” Chiejina asserted.
The statement further clarified that no agreement on pricing has been reached, as the contract between Dangote Petroleum Refinery and NNPC is yet to be finalised.
Chiejina added, “The issue of fixing the price of petrol lifted from our refinery does not arise, as we are yet to finalise our contract with NNPC.”
Dangote Group also took the opportunity to remind the public about the regulated nature of the PMS market in Nigeria. The company stated that as an oil marketer, they have no authority to determine, fix, or influence product prices, which fall under the jurisdiction of relevant government authorities.
The press release urged the public to disregard the misleading headline, stressing that it does not accurately represent the current situation. Despite the controversy, Dangote remains optimistic about its role in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. The company reassured Nigerians of its commitment to providing “exceptionally high quality petroleum products that will be readily available all over the country.”
