‘No more abuse of consumers’ rights in Lagos’ (Punch)

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency says it will check all forms of abuse of consumers’ rights in the state. Officials of the agency took to the streets on Thursday, marching from the Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, to Allen Avenue, in Ikeja, as part of activities to mark the 2018 World Consumer Day. The Chairman of LASCOPA, Funmilola Falana, said the agency was doing everything possible to protect consumers in the state. Falana stated that the establishment of the agency confirmed the state government’s desire of maintaining international standards in the quality of goods and services that Lagosians purchased. Cultism, biggest security challenge in Lagos — CP Lagos (Vanguard)

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, yesterday, described cultism as one of the biggest security challenges in the state , calling on leaders in all spheres to join hand together to phase out the menace. Speaking at the occasion of a public renunciation of cultism by 139 youths , among them females, at the Badagry Local Government Council secretariat, Edgal lamented that cultism had not only been been introduced in primary and secondary schools but had been taken beyond the shores of the country. The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday described Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode as a populist and welfarist governor, following his administration’s downward review of the controversial Land Use Charge. Mr Tunde Braimoh, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Publicity, Strategy and Security told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that people’s will remains the ultimate in democracy. NAN reports that the Lagos State Government on Thursday buckled under pressure, announcing a downward review of its new Land Use Charge (LUC) that had been widely criticised. Read more

But the important thing is that the majority of the representatives have keyed into it, so we just work with the people we are standing in for. LAGBUS lose 7 Vehicles in Olusosun Dumpsite Fire (Leadership)

The Wednesday morning fire at Olusosun dumpsite in Lagos burnt seven buses belonging to LAGBUS Asset Management Limite, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has learnt.A LAGBUS official, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN on Thursday in Lagos that due to the thick smoke still surrounding the area, the company was yet to make further assessment of losses suffered.The official said that the firm had moved staff away from the area because of the health implications of the smoky environment. Lekki wife tortures, locks maid in toilet (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fashion designer, Bisi Olukayode, for allegedly torturing her maid, Anjuah Sunday, aka Titi, at her residence in the Lekki area of the state. Punch Metro learnt that Sunday had been living with the suspect at her residence in Lekki Gardens Estate Phase 3, for two years. The Togolese, who arrived in Lagos with her grandmother, was allegedly renamed Titi  and handed over to the Olukayodes by an agent. It was alleged that Bisi tortured the 14-year-old with sticks, wire and canes, during which the victim sustained injuries in different parts of her body. Read more

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of attempting to score cheap political points with the abduction of schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State last month. Pastor arraigned for allegedly defrauding member (Guardian)

A Bayelsa State-based pastor, Apostle Kingsley of God is Able mega fire ministry, was yesterday arraigned in a magistrate court sitting in Yenagoa for allegedly obtaining a Toyota SUV and N20,000 under false pretense from a member of his church. The pastor was said to have collected the vehicle and the alleged sum under false pretense of praying for financial breakthrough for the unsuspecting member. He was arraigned by the police, through its counsel, I. Amakiri in a three-count charge of obtaining by tricks and conspiracy. Read more

Nigeria e-Commerce market to Hit $13bn in 2018 – Study (Leadership)

The fourth edition of Nigeria Mobile Report released yesterday by Jumia Nigeria estimates that the country’s e-commerce market is worth $13 billion this year, indicating a gradual adoption of online marketplace by consumers. The study showed that Nigeria remains Africa’s largest mobile market, with about 162 million subscribers and a penetration rate of 84 per cent.

The number of subscribers fell in 2017 as consumers responded to a poor economic climate, adopted other OTT channels for voice and data services, and as regulatory measures continued to oblige operators to disconnect unregistered SIM cards. Read More

Shell, GTB Grant $270m Oil-backed loan to Amni International (ThisDay)

Barely two months after Shoreline Group sealed a $530 million finance deal with Vitol Group and local lenders, including Union Bank Plc, Ecobank Transnational Inc., Fidelity Bank Plc and FCMB Group Plc, another Nigerian independent producer, Amni International, has sealed a $270 million loan deal with Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Shell Western Supply and Trading Plc. The terms of loan will give Shell Western Supply and Trading Plc sole access to the 16,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil the company pumps in two fields off Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta region. Read more

Aborted Public Hearing on Hijab: MURIC suspects foul play (Vanguard)

The public hearing organised by the House Committee on Judiciary and Justice failed to hold for the second time Wednesday.  Although several Muslim groups appeared for the purported hearing, they were disappointed as the chairman of the committee, Hon. Razaq Atunwa, explained that an interlocutory injunction seeking to stop the hearing had been served on the committee. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), however condemned the development, saying: “Apart from being highly provocative, it is saddening, nauseating and appalling. It is an attempt to manipulate the course of justice, rape of democracy and a travesty of justice. But above all, it is an attempt to make a mockery of the legislature. Read more

Jonathan’s bribe would’ve landed me in prison – Dalung (SUN)

Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Barr. Solomon Dalung, has revealed that rejecting a tempting bribe former President Gooluck Jonathan offered him at the State House in 2014 saved him from incarceration at the Kuje Medium Prison. Dalung made the disclosure at a workshop organized by the Citizenship and Leadership Training Center in Abuja yesterday, explaining that though he won’t mention the figure offered to him, it was however tempting enough to transform his life from poverty to riches. Describing the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Attahiru Jega, who presented a paper, as a man of impeccable integrity, Dalung blamed Nigerians for encouraging leaders to be corrupt. Govt worker protests posting, hires gang to beat boss (Punch)

A staff member of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kehinde Adeoye, is cooling his heels in police custody after allegedly leading a gang to attack his boss at Oposuru, in the Lemode area of Ogun State. During the attack, a resident was reportedly killed by one of the gang members, Kayode Johnson. Johnson, who was beaten up by a mob, was also taken into custody. Punch Metro learnt that 27-year-old Adeoye was in charge of selling tickets to passengers until recently when he was posted to a railway terminus, Kajola Railway Terminus, in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
