Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, released from detention – Dafieta Ighohwo

Veteran Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu, has been released after spending four days in the custody

of the Department of State Service (DSS).

His release, which came to light on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 via a statement by the Director of Communications for the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Monalisa Chinda, is the product of joint efforts of the National President of the guild, Emeka Rollas and other stakeholders.

Mr Agu, who is known for his humour and catchy Igbo phrases in movies, was first arrested by the Nigerian Army on Thursday, October 8, 2021 for his attire that resembled the Biafran flag. This happened while he was on a charity mission in Onitsha. He denied the allegation, insisting that his outfit ”is a civil dress” and unrelated to Biafra.

Shortly after his release, he was picked up by the DSS and transferred to Abuja for further investigations. A thorough search through the actor’s phone revealed nothing incriminating.

Mr Agu is grateful to God and AGN leadership for his freedom, according to the guild’s statement.
