NSML launches Clean Water Initiative to combat plastic pollution crisis

In a bold move to tackle the growing plastic pollution crisis, NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML), has officially launched its Clean Water Initiative.

This groundbreaking programme aims to not only raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution but also advocate for urgent action to address this critical issue that impacts both the environment and human health.

The Chief Executive Officer of NSML, Mr Abdulkadir Ahmed, emphasised the pressing nature of the plastic crisis and its adverse effects on various aspects of society. He pointed out that plastics and marine pollution have infiltrated every corner of marine ecosystems, negatively impacting economic activities, human well-being, and the environment at large.

“Our Waterways, and by extension the world’s oceans, are in the depths of a plastic crisis. Plastics and marine pollution have found their way into every marine ecosystem, impacting economic activities and the health of our people and the environment,” Mr Ahmed stated passionately.

The launch of the Clean Water Initiative couldn’t have come at a more crucial time. With the world grappling with the relentless influx of plastic waste, the United Nations reports an alarming statistic: over 8 million tonnes of plastic enter oceans annually. Scientists warn that if left unchecked, by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea, by weight.

The NSML Clean Water Initiative operates on a “TRIPLE A” strategy – Awareness, Advocacy, and Action. This multifaceted approach aims to raise public consciousness, educate stakeholders, and catalyse policy changes and solutions at both sub-national and national levels. The initiative’s focus includes cleanup endeavours, enhanced waste management practices, and the promotion of recycling methods to curtail the inflow of plastics and waste into rivers and waterways.

Nigeria LNG Limited’s (NLNG’s) General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, underscored the universal importance of the clean water initiative due to the critical role water plays in human existence. He hailed it as a collective effort to safeguard the planet’s water bodies.

The launch event attracted key stakeholders from the industry, indicating the significance of collaborative action in addressing the plastic pollution crisis. As a subsidiary of NLNG, NSML plays a pivotal role in shipping and maritime services, offering expertise in training, fleet management, and consultancy services.

The NSML Clean Water Initiative stands as a remarkable stride in the battle against plastic pollution, inviting all stakeholders to partake in this vital cause. With its comprehensive approach, the initiative aims not only to mitigate plastic pollution but also to inspire a sustainable future for our oceans and the planet as a whole.

The NSML Clean Water Initiative is a significant step forward in the fight against plastic pollution.
