Okoli Ahinze, a 500-level student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has been beaten to death over alleged theft.

It was gathered that the deceased was beaten to death inside the Awo Hall on Monday. The student was said to have been rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile-Ife after complications on Tuesday.

Doctors on duty confirmed him dead when he was brought to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital. Read more

5 Lagos men in court for murder, kidnapping (Punch)

A  Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba has ordered the remand of five persons who were allegedly involved in kidnapping, murder and armed robbery in the state.

The defendants include Lateef Kazeem, Eric Adetola, Sanusi Momoh, Samuel Anuoluwapo and Adamson Olayinka.

It was gathered that the defendants were arrested by men of the State Criminal Investigation Department for kidnapping, killing one person, Emmanuel Ezeike, at Abule Ado in January, and defrauding him of N2m as well as robbing other victims. Read more

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State, Dino Melaye has fired back at Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who laughed off his aspiration to succeed Governor Yahaya Bello.

In a statement on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Melaye said Kogi is not Rivers State where Wike determines who becomes governor, adding that power belongs to God.

At a media chat earlier on Tuesday, Wike ruled out Melaye ahead of the PDP primary which precedes the November 15 governorship poll in the North Central state.

“When you give Dino that ticket, you know he won’t win in Kogi State,” Wike said during the parley. Read more 

Police vow to prosecute combatants in land dispute in Lagos estate (Vanguard)

Police in Lagos State have vowed to bring those responsible for the breach of peace in a tussle over land ownership at Magodo-Isheri on Tuesday to book.

Commissioner of police in the state, Mr Idowu Owohunwa, made the vow after peace was restored in the area.

Hoodlums clashed at the Magodo-Isheri area on Tuesday over a court judgment.

The hoodlums stormed the area to prevent court bailiffs from pasting an Appeal Court’s judgment given on March 16, confirming landlords in the community as owners of the land. Read more

Ex-Anambra governor Mbadinuju dies at 78 (Guardian)

Former governor of Anambra State, Chinwoke Mbadinuju has passed away at the age of 78.

Mbadinuju died on Tuesday morning at the National Hospital Abuja after a brief illness.

“At this trying time, we pray for God’s grace and mercy upon him and those left behind to mourn him,” his family said in a statement.

Western special forces inside Ukraine, leak shows (BBC)

The UK is among a number of countries with military special forces operating inside Ukraine, according to one of dozens of documents leaked online.

It confirms what has been the subject of quiet speculation for over a year.

The leaked files, some marked “top secret”, paint a detailed picture of the war in Ukraine, including sensitive details of Ukraine’s preparations for a spring counter-offensive.

The US government says it is investigating the source of the leak.

According to the document, dated 23 March, the UK has the largest contingent of special forces in Ukraine (50), followed by fellow Nato states Latvia (17), France (15), the US (14) and the Netherlands (1). Read more

In response to a reporter’s question, Biden stressed the importance of a 1998 agreement that brought peace to the island after decades of sectarian strife between mostly Catholic nationalists, who wished to unite with neighboring Ireland, and mostly Protestant Unionists, who wished to remain within the United Kingdom.

Biden’s top priority on this three-day visit — which will take him across the island, hitting the Northern Irish capital, Dublin, and his family’s ancestral home of Ballina — is to “make sure the Irish accords and the Windsor agreements stay in place,” he said. “Keep the peace, that’s the main thing.” Read more

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has moved the training camp for the final leg of preparations for the Africa U18 and U20 championships earlier slated for Abuja to Asaba, Delta State’s capital with the arrival date shifted by a day.

The Africa U18 and U20 championships will hold from April 29 to May 3, 2023 in Ndola, Zambia.AFN’s technical director, Samuel Onikeku, says in a statement that the shifting of the venue from the High Performance Centre in Abuja to Asaba is to enable the athletes train with the best of equipment which were used at the 21st National Sports Festival held last December in the state.

The final round of the 2023 Masters Tournament, which averaged more than 12 million viewers on CBS, was the most-watched golf telecast on any network in five years, Paramount announced Tuesday.

The final round of the major, played Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., averaged 12.058 million viewers. The 2018 Masters final round drew 13.045 million viewers.

Sunday’s CBS presentation totaled 16.251 million viewers, when average viewership was combined from the conclusion of the suspended third round and full final round. The Masters, which was suspended four times because of rain, resumed the third round Sunday morning and teed off the final round at 12:30 p.m. EDT Sunday in Augusta. Read more
