OAU’s 100-level student commits suicide, management counsels students (Vanguard)

A 100-level student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Salako Treasure, was reported to have killed herself by consuming a substance suspected of sniper.

The deceased said to be of the Department of Entrepreneur, was found dead inside an uncompleted building around the Lagere area of the town on Wednesday evening with a bottle of sniper beside her body.

Findings revealed that Salako had been undergoing some emotional trauma known to some of her friends and acquittance before the tragic incident. Read more 

Reps reject motion to declare ‘Japa’ national emergency (DailyTrust)

The House of Representatives has rejected a motion seeking to stop ‘japa’, a trend that sees (young) Nigerians leaving the country in their numbers for the United States, Europe and other countries around the world in search of greener pastures.

The motion sponsored by Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), who used to live in the UK, was presented at plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the motion, the lawmaker said the situation is taking away young, productive Nigerians abroad and should be declared as a national emergency. Read more 

Nollywood actor, Agoro dies at 48 (Punch)

Popular Nollywood actor widely regarded as the tallest man in Nigeria, Afeez Agoro Oladimiji, has passed away.

Agoro was said to have breathed his last on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

Before his demise, Agoro was 7ft 4in tall.

The intimidating height of the deceased, who was featured in some movies, attracted stares wherever he went. Read more

Popular social media commentator, Daniel Regha has reacted following the suspension of the Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), AbdulRasheed Bawa, by President Bola Tinubu.

Taking to his Twitter handle Wednesday, Regha claimed Bawa’s suspension means “nothing”.

Lagos asks Police to probe 2 doctors for alleged organ harvest of 2 teenagers (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government through its Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, has directed the Lagos State Police Command to investigate the alleged removal of two ladies’ ovaries by two doctors in Ogun and Lagos states.

This is just as the victims have said the pains from the extraction done since last September had prevented them from seeking admission into tertiary institutions.

The victims, one of who is the daughter of a General Overseer of a Pentecostal church in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos, in a report earlier published in Vanguard, revealed how they were deceived and taken to Redwood Hospital in Abeokuta, Ogun State at different times by a neighbour they identified as Blessing Adeleke in September 2022. Social media personality, Ismailia Mustapha popularly known as Mompha, has mocked suspended chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa.

President Bola Tinubu suspended Bawa “to allow an investigation into the allegation of corruption and abuse of office”.

NAFDAC alerts Nigerians on substandard Paracetamol from Liberia (Guardian)

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert against the intake of substandard Paracetamol from Liberia.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, NAFDAC issued an official statement to warn Nigerians against purchasing the drug before even thinking about taking it.

“The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is notifying the public of a substandard paracetamol suspension PARA CLEAR SUSPENSION 125 received from Liberian Medicine and Health Product Regulatory Authority for laboratory testing in the NAFDAC Central Drug Control Laboratory (CDCL),” NAFDAC wrote. Police smash child-trafficking syndicate in Delta, arrest cripple, other suspects, rescue 3-year-old child (Independent)

The operatives of the Delta State Police Command said they have dismantled a child-trafficking cartel and arrested some mem­bers of the gang including a cripple.

Hacker who stole Ed Sheeran songs told to pay £100k (BBC)

A hacker who stole two unreleased songs from Ed Sheeran and sold them on the dark web has to pay more than £100,000.

Adrian Kwiatkowski, 23, from Ipswich, traded the music by Sheeran and 12 songs by rapper Lil Uzi Vert in exchange for cryptocurrency.

Last year, he admitted 19 charges, including copyright infringement and possessing criminal property, and was jailed for 18 months. Read more

Oscar-winning actress and former MP Glenda Jackson has died at the age of 87, her agent has said.

Jackson became an international star in the 1970s, winning Oscars for Women In Love and A Touch of Class, and receiving two further nominations.

She also starred as Queen Elizabeth I in the BBC drama Elizabeth R.

Politics was always important, and she gave up acting to join the House of Commons as a Labour MP in north London from 1992 to 2015. Read more

Zoe Saldaña responds to Avatar sequel delays (DigitalSpy)

Zoe Saldaña has weighed in on Avatar 3, 4 and 5’s delay in production.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the sequel to Avatar: The Way of Water will now debut on December 19, 2025 instead of next year, while Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have both had their release dates pushed back by three years.

This means the fourth installment won’t be released until December 2029, and the fifth and final movie won’t debut until December 2031. Read more

Peter Gabriel has cancelled his planned show at Nottingham Motorpoint Arena next Tuesday (20th June) due to ‘logistical problems.’

When Peter Gabriel announced the UK & Ireland leg of i/o – The Tour in November, Nottingham wasn’t part of the itinerary, however it was added three months later in February 2023.

Sudan: West Darfur governor reportedly killed in captivity (MEE)

The Sudanese military has accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of killing the governor of West Darfur state in captivity, an accusation the RSF denies.

Khamis ِAbdullah Abakar is the most senior figure to be killed since battles rampaged Sudanese cities since April.

The details of his alleged death are still unclear but came hours after he delivered a television interview in which he highlighted the widespread killings in West Darfur’s state capital El-Geneina, accusing the RSF of committing genocide. Read more
