Lagos police detain officers brutalising Okada man in viral video (Punch)

The Nigeria Police Force said it had arrested and detained the policemen who were seen in a viral video brutalising an Okada rider in Lagos.

The Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed this on Wednesday evening during a Twitter Space webinar organised by Premium Times.

The PUNCH reports that three policemen were seen in the viral video brutalising the Okada man, identified as Al-Hassan Usman, in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State. Read more

Police brutalise Okada rider, seize motorcycle in Lagos (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified motorcyclist has been brutalised by policemen attempting to seize his motorcycle around Ogundele Street, Oja Oba in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

The PUNCH gathered that the motorcyclist was going to a destination in the area when the policemen accosted him.

The reason why the policemen accosted the motorcyclist could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report but during the attempt to seize the motorcycle, the motorcyclist resisted. Read more

Suspect remanded for stabbing man to death in Lagos (Punch)

A 45-year-old man, Rabiu Haruna, was on Monday remanded to the Kirikiri Custodial Centre, Lagos for allegedly killing one Ismaila Sunday with a knife.

The defendant was arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court presided over by Magistrate O.Y. Adefope on one count of murder.

According to the prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, the defendant committed the offence on April 16, 2023, around 12.13 am, at Happy Home, Kirikiri Town, Lagos State.

3 in court for beating Lagos man to death (Punch)

Three men accused of murder and attempted murder were on Monday remanded to the Kirikiri Custodial Centre, Lagos.

The defendants, Mukaila Nofiu, Wasiu Rasheed and Hassan Kazeem, were arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court for the alleged murder of one Alade Bello and for the attempted murder of Lasisi Sikiru who is still undergoing medical treatment.

They were arraigned before Magistrate O.Y. Adefope on three counts of murder and attempted murder. Read more

Whitney: Witness says Chrisland pupil not electrocuted (Punch)

A cotton candy vendor, Ademoye Adewale, who sold snacks to pupils of Chrisland Schools Opebi, at Agege Stadium, Lagos during the school’s recent sports activities on Monday told the coroner set up to unravel the cause of death of Whitney Adeniran that the autopsy conducted by the Lagos State Government was erroneous.

He said Whitney did not die as a result of electrocution as stated in the autopsy report.

Adewale, who said he makes Shawarma, Candy Floss, Popcorn, and Barbecue on request, stated this before Magistrate Olanike Fajana, at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba. Read more

Cashier absconds with employer’s N1.8m in Lagos (Punch)

A 29-year-old cashier, Olasumbo Sammie, was on Monday arraigned for allegedly running away with proceeds of shaving sticks and blades worth N1.8m belonging to her employer.

Sammie, who was employed as a cashier in 2022, was alleged to have sold the shaving sticks and blades but failed to remit the proceeds to her employer.

The defendant was arraigned by the police before a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State on two counts of stealing. Read more

N1.8b tramadol from India, Pakistan seized at Lagos Airport (Punch)

The Nigeria Customs Service had intercepted and seized no fewer than 23 packages of tramadol worth N1.8 billion imported into the country from India and Pakistan.

The PUNCH reports that the substance was seized at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos Command of the NCS.

The Customs Area Controller of the command, Compt. Mohammed Yusuf, who disclosed this on Wednesday, at a media briefing at the MMA to announce the command’s first quarter activities, said the tramadol seized were above the threshold allowed by law to be imported into the country. Read more

Lagos: Naked man found dead inside car (Punch)

Residents and passers-by around Isheri, Olowora Road, Ojodu Berger in Lagos woke up on Thursday to behold a strange scene in the neighbourhood.

The corpse of a yet-to-be-identified man was said to have been found in a car in the neighbourhood.

An eyewitness, who spoke with PUNCH Metro on the condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, said the man was found naked in a black Toyota car. Read more

Lagos school guard allegedly defiles 4-year-old pupil (Punch)

A security guard at Greater Scholars International School, Lekki, identified only as Mr David, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly raping a four-year-old pupil of the school.

A viral tweet posted by a Tweep, Omolomo @TheVawulence, alleged that the pupil was raped by the guard, beaten and warned not to inform anyone.

The child, however, told her father.

The Tweep alleged that the pupil’s father was threatened by thugs when he reported the case to the police at the Ajiwe Police Station. Read more

Police recover weapons from Lagos teenage cultists (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested five teenagers suspected to be involved in cultism.

This is also as some weapons shaped like small axes were recovered from them.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known on Saturday as he posted pictures of the teenagers with the weapons on his Twitter page.

Lagos technician bags life jail for defiling neighbour’s daughter (Punch)

A 26-year-old automobile technician popularly known as rewire, Sunday George, was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for defiling his neighbour’s 12-year-old daughter.

The judge handed down the verdict after finding George guilty of the offence of defilement of a minor.

Justice Abiola Soladoye held that the prosecution proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond a reasonable doubt. Read more

Woman in court for stealing N790k (Punch)

A 34-year-old woman, Nofisat Abolanle, was on Thursday arraigned before the Ogba Magistrates’ Court sitting in the Ikeja area of Lagos State for allegedly stealing an Automated Teller Machine card belonging to one Ibrahim Oluwole.

She was said to have used the card to transfer N790,000 to her bank account.

Abolanle was arraigned before Magistrate M.O Joseph on two counts.

Tenant beats up landlady for demanding electricity bill (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Usman Hammed before a Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogudu for allegedly assaulting his landlady, Josephine Durodola, at her residence at No 25, Olaniyi Street, Agiliti, in the Mile 12 area of the state.

The defendant was arraigned on Thursday before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola for assault.

The prosecutor, Inspector Donjor Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 8, 2023, around 9pm at No 25, Olaniyi Street, Agiliti, in the Mile 12 area of the state. Read more

Assault: Seun Kuti turns self in to Police (Channels)

Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, submitted himself to the Lagos State Police Command on Monday morning over an investigation into his alleged assault on a policeman.

He reported to the police in the company of his lawyer and a family member, spokesman for the police command, Benjamin Hundeyin told Channels Television.

Hundeyin said Seun is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department in the Panti area of the state. Read more

Assault: Court grants Seun Kuti bail (Channels) 

A Magistrate’s Court in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Tuesday granted bail to embattled Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti.

Kuti is expected to meet his bail conditions within 48 hours, his lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN); as well as police spokesman in the state, Benjamin Hundeyin both told Channels Television in separate interviews.

The Lagos State Police Command had taken Seun to court to secure a 21-day remand order but the court granted the singer bail. Read more

Lady remanded in Kirikiri for assaulting Lagos policeman (Channels)

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned a resident, Olufumilayo Brioluwa, for assaulting a police officer.

The Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin disclosed this in a Twitter post on Tuesday.

According to Hundeyin, Brioluwa assaulted the police officer in the Ogombo area of the state.

She was remanded at the Kirikiri correctional facility till June 6 when the case comes up again in court. Read more

Eze Ndigbo arraigned on terrorism charges in Lagos (Channels)

The Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate in Lagos, Frederick Nkemdilim Nwajagu, has been arraigned before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of a Lagos High Court sitting in Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), for alleged terrorism.

Nwajagu is being prosecuted by the Lagos State Government on nine-count charges bordering on an attempt to commit acts of terrorism, participation in terrorism, meeting to support a proscribed entity, attempting to finance an act of terrorism, and preparation to commit an act of terrorism.

In the suit marked no: LD/21505C/2023, his offences are said to contravene the provision of Section 403(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and sections 12(c), 18, 21, 29 & 12(a) of the Terrorism (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022, among others. Read more

Court jails 2 men for unlawful possession of elephant tusks, pangolin scales (DailyTrust)

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced two men, John Kanu, and Obinna Eze, to four years imprisonment, for conspiracy and unlawful possession of 839.4kg of Pangolin Scales and 145kg of Elephant Tusks.

Both Kanu and Eze were handed the sentence by Justice Nicholas Oweibo, after they pleaded guilty to the charges against them by the Federal Operation Unit, Zone A, of the Nigerian Customs Services, Lagos.

The two convicts were arraigned alongside Anthony Onyebuchi and Monday Nnamanni, in an amended charge marked FHC/L/123c/22. Read more
