Ojota service lane closed for six weeks (Guardian)

The service lane inbound Maryland from the end of Gani Fawehinmi Park to the end of the second pedestrian bridge, Ojota has been partially closed, the Lagos State Government announced on Tuesday.

The road closure will be for six weeks.

Transport commissioner Frederic Oladeinde said the partial closure is to allow the contractor to handle the stretch of the project from Ojota to Maryland to continue with the next phase of the construction, which includes the reconstruction of the Ikorodu road.

As a result of this new arrangement, motorists coming from the Ikeja axis are advised to use 7UP road through Billings Way to link Oregun/Kudirat Abiola Way inbound Ikorodu road by Ojota bus stop. Read more

Task force, Okada riders clash on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway (Punch)

Officials of the Lagos State Task Force and Okada riders on Tuesday clashed at Second Rainbow Bus Stop along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

It was gathered that officials of the task force had arrived at the bus stop to impound Okadas when the clash occurred.

Eyewitnesses narrated that the Okada riders resisted the officials of the task force from impounding their motorcycles.

The PUNCH gathered that the clash happened about 12:15 pm on Tuesday.

In a bid to express their displeasures, the Okada riders set bonfires on the expressway, leading to gridlock. Read more

COVID-19: Lagos tasks managers on strategies to improve business outputs (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government has urged managers to adopt strategies aimed at improving business model outputs to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the economy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, made the call at the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) 2020 annual national management conference themed: “Managing the Impact of COVID-19: Survival Strategies” on Tuesday in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu was represented by Mrs Ajibola Ponnle, Commissioner, Lagos Ministry of Establishments, Training, and Pensions.

Sanwo-Olu said that the pandemic had disrupted and challenged the status quo which had resulted in a new normal way of achieving organisational goals and objectives. Read more

#EndSARS: Rep accuses Malami of lying about Lekki Shooting (Guardian)

Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, has been enjoined to tender an apology to Nigerians for lying over the involvement of soldiers in the shooting of protesters at Lekki tollgate in Lagos State.

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Yusuf (PDP: Kogi) said it was unfortunate that the chief law officer told a lie that hoodlums dressed in military fatigues were involved in the shooting incidence.

Yusuf in a statement advised the Federal Government to reverse its “missteps” of freezing bank accounts, as well as siezing of international passports of Nigerian youths considered to have actively taken part in the nationwide protest against policy brutality, otherwise known as “#EndSars Protest”. Schoolteacher who lost two-month pregnancy to SARS’ torture is Evans’ sister – Police (Punch)

The police on Tuesday said they arrested a schoolteacher, Ndubuisi Obiechina, in 2017 because her phone number and that of her husband were allegedly used by the notorious alleged kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, to make contact with the family of a kidnap victim to collect $1m ransom.

The schoolteacher and her husband, Ogechukwu, had first appeared on October 31 before the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing cases of rights violations by men of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.

Obiechina had narrated to the retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel how she was arrested by SARS, detained, and tortured over a period of 22 days till she lost her two-month pregnancy. Read more

Miss Chisom Egbunuche, only daughter of “Nigeria’s oldest prisoner”, late Pa Celestine Egbunuche has cried out over the ‘abandonment’ of her father’s corpse in the mortuary, more than one year after his death.

She has called on Nigerians to help her pay mortuary charges and bury her father.

Pa Egbunuche, who hailed from Amachara Owerre Village, Akokwa in Ideato, Council, Imo state, died on October 18, 2019, a few months after he was released from Enugu prison. Read more

3 feared dead, shops looted as hoodlums clash in Lagos (Punch)

No fewer than three persons have been feared dead after hoodlums clashed in some parts of Mushin and Surulere areas of Lagos State.

Punch Metro learnt that the fight, which started around 8pm on Sunday between two groups at a party on Alaafia Street, extended to neighbouring streets in the area.

The fight, which extended till Monday, was said to be a supremacy battle between the factions.

Among the affected streets were Daniel, Alafia, Morgan, Babalola, Sowunmi and Olusoga.

Our correspondent learnt that the fight left many injured, while over 200 shops were looted and many vehicles destroyed. Read more

Court grants #EndSARS protester Eromosele N1m bail (Guardian)

A Magistrate court in Yaba, Lagos State, on Tuesday granted bail to #EndSARS protester, Eronmosele Adene, in the sum of one million naira.

The court granted the bail after it rejected a request by the police for an order to detain him for another 30 days to enable them to conclude investigations into the allegations against the defendant.

Adene, was reportedly picked up from his Allen Avenue, Lagos home on November 8th for his involvement in the protests.

In a series of tweets, Eromosele claimed that he was whisked away by officers from Area “F” Command, Ikeja. Read more

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that his administration would do everything to prevent a repeat of the recent #EndSARS protest.

The President gave the assurance during the National Security Council (NSC) meeting held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.

Briefing State House Correspondents on the proceedings from the meeting, the Minister of Police Affairs, Muhammad Dingyadi, said President Buhari also stated that Nigerians, especially the youth, would be carried along by the administration in issues concerning maintenance of peace in the country. Ebola-like virus which causes massive bleeding found to jump from human to human after Bolivia outbreak (RT)

Scientists have sounded the alarm over an Ebola-like virus from Bolivia which has been found to spread from person to person, killing three out of every five confirmed patients.

The rodent-borne Chapare virus first emerged in 2004 in the Bolivian province from which it gets its name, about 370 miles east of the country’s capital city, La Paz.

New research has shed light on the deadliness of the disease and how it spread from patient zero.

Following a 2019 outbreak in the country, researchers have found that, though it comes from a different viral family than Ebola, it also causes hemorrhagic fever, which can, in turn, cause life-threatening organ failure and bleeding. Read more

NASA SpaceX mission: Dragon capsule docks with space station (BBC)

The four astronauts who left Earth on Monday (GMT) have arrived at the International Space Station (ISS).

Their SpaceX Dragon capsule made a series of inch-perfect manoeuvres to bring them into an attachment position on the front of the orbiting lab.

Commander Mike Hopkins, Shannon Walker, Victor Glover and Soichi Noguchi will be spending the next six months aloft.

They join three individuals already aboard – Kate Rubins, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov. Read more

Mouthwash can kill COVID-19 in 30 seconds: Study (AlJazeera)

Over-the-counter mouthwash can kill coronavirus within 30 seconds of exposure, a study has found.

Scientists at Cardiff University discovered mouthwash containing at least 0.07 percent cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) showed “promising signs” of reducing transmission of the virus.

Their preliminary report, which is yet to be peer-reviewed, supports a study published last week that found mouthwash containing CPC helps in reducing the viral load of people infected with the coronavirus. Read more

CNN star anchor Christiane Amanpour has apologised for taking a potshot at Donald Trump by ‘juxtaposing’ him with the Nazis, after the comparison drew angry rebukes and complaints to the network from Israeli officials.

The veteran journalist launched her Nazi-themed attack against the incumbent US president last week. She said his administration was “four years of a modern-day assault” on “fact, knowledge, history, and truth” similarly to how Nazi Germany enforced its ideology.

The comparison came as Amanpour reflected on how the organized pogroms of Jews during Kristallnacht 82 years ago were “a warning shot across the bow of our human civilization that led to genocide against a whole identity.” Read more

Boy Scouts of America: Almost 100,000 make sexual abuse compensation claims (BBC)

Almost 100,000 alleged victims of sexual abuse within the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) have come forward to claim compensation from the group.

A lawyer for the plaintiffs called it the biggest-ever US sexual abuse case. The claims were filed ahead of a deadline on Monday evening.

Internal files published in 2012 revealed decades of abuse.

BSA – which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year – has apologised to victims, saying it was “devastated”.

Negotiations will now begin between the alleged victims, the BSA and their insurers. Read more

Hurricane Iota: Category four storm hits Nicaragua (BBC)

A powerful hurricane has brought torrential rains and strong winds to Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast, two weeks after another devastating storm hit.

Iota made landfall as a category four storm near the town of Puerto Cabezas, where patients had to be evacuated from a makeshift hospital after its roof was ripped off.

Residents are in shelters, and there are fears of food shortages.

The storm has weakened and Honduras is expected to be hit later on Tuesday.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Iota was now a category two storm, but warned it could bring life-threatening storm surges, catastrophic winds, flash flooding and landslides. Read more

“The Good Doctor” star Richard Schiff, who tweeted last week that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus, followed up Monday by reporting that he’s in the hospital being treated for COVID-19.

In a tweet thanking people for “love and support,” “The West Wing” alum said he’s taking remdesivir and steroids, both treatments for the viral illness, and is receiving oxygen. He offers a hopeful prognosis, saying that he’s “showing some improvement every day.”

Schiff’s wife, actress and “Good Doctor” co-star Sheila Kelley, “Is home and doing better but still fairly ill,” wrote the actor, who revealed in his earlier tweet that he learned of his positive diagnosis on Election Day. Read more

Defending champions Algeria gave away a two goal lead as they were held 2-2 by hosts Zimbabwe.

Despite the draw the Algerians have confirmed their place at the next Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon, which have been delayed until 2022.

After goals in the 34th and 38th minutes, including a fine solo effort from Riyad Mahrez, it looked like Algeria would make it four wins from four.
