Notorious terrorist surrendered in Borno – MNJTF (Punch)

A notorious Boko Haram terrorist, Bochu Abacha, has surrendered to troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force deployed in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

A statement released on Saturday by the Information Officer of the MNJTF, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, noted that the terrorist has admitted to being a notorious Boko Haram terrorist who has participated in several Boko Haram/ISWAP operations along the Mongunu–Baga axis of the state.

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, October 1, 2024, as a public holiday to celebrate the nation’s 64th Independence Day.

Borno begins verification of over 7,000 flood victims (DailyTrust)

The Borno State Flood Relief Distribution Committee has initiated the verification process for over 7,000 victims affected by recent flooding in Limanti Ward, within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.

The exercise is being conducted at Abubakar ibn Garbai Elkanemi primary school.

Barbara Leigh-Hunt, the actor who starred in one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most controversial movies, Frenzy, has passed away at the age of 88.

Poland’s death toll from floods rises to 9 after 2 more bodies found (ABC)

The death toll in Poland from recent floods has risen to nine, after two more bodies were found, the national police chief said Saturday.

One person is still missing, police chief Marek Boron told a government meeting on the the effects of the floods that hit southwestern Poland earlier this month.

The floods following torrential rains inundated houses and damaged bridges and roads in the towns of Stronie Slaskie, Nysa and many villages in the area. More than 20 people had died in Poland and elsewhere in Central Europe from the floods. Read more

More than 13,000 immigrants convicted of homicide — either in the United States or abroad — are living freely in the U.S., outside of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention, according to data ICE provided to Congress earlier this week.

The immigrants are part of ICE’s “non-detained” docket, meaning the agency has some information on the immigrants and they have pending immigration cases in the U.S., but they are not currently in detention either because they are not prioritized for detention or because ICE cannot find them.

Acting ICE Director P.J. Lechleitner sent the data, collected as of July 21, as part of a request sent in March from Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales of Texas. Read more

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed against the decision to clear Jannik Sinner after he twice tested positive for a banned substance.

Sinner, twice a Grand Slam champion in 2024, tested positive in March for the anabolic steroid clostebol, before being cleared in August by an independent tribunal who determined he was not to blame.

But WADA has confirmed it is appealing that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and is seeking a ban of between one and two years for the Italian, who is currently playing at the China Open in Beijing. Read more
