Ondo police arrest housemaid, son over killing of boss (Punch)

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three persons in connection with the death of a woman, Mrs Iyanuoluwa Adamolekun, in Arigidi Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of the state.

Adamolekun, a retired teacher, was allegedly killed in her room while sleeping, by the suspects who also took away her mobile telephone last week. Her lifeless body was reportedly discovered by her grandchild in the afternoon of the fateful day.

The suspects, who were simply identified as Oluwaseun Mobarak and Rilwan Oluwaseun, are the househelp and Mobarak’s mother. Read more

Tinubu signs Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria bill into law (Guardian)

Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday.

The bill was sponsored by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Defence, Hon. Babajimi Benson (APC—Ikorodu Federal Constituency).

The DICON Bill, 2023, according to Ngelale, repeals the previous version of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria Act and empowers DICON to operate, maintain, and control subsidiaries and ordnance factories to manufacture, store, and dispose of ordnance and ancillary stores and materials. Mayhem looms as Magodo residents send S.O.S to Sanwo-Olu over landgrabbers’ threat (Vanguard)

Residents of the Magodo GRA Phase II Estate in Lagos on Thursday, sent a Save Our Souls and Properties message to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, following a fresh invasion of the estate and threat to their safety and security due to incessant forceful access by unauthorised persons to the wetlands around the estate.

The residents alleged that land speculators and developers aided by top officials of Lagos State Physical Planning and Urban Development have decided on building the wetland and they are bent on making an incursion therein through Magodo Phase II.

They described the act as a direct threat to the environment, safety and security of a community with over 16,000 residents, who have lived peacefully and securely in the estate for more than three decades. Read more

Lagos seeks timely remittance of Hajj initial deposit (Nation)

Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has sought the cooperation of the Hajj and Umrah stakeholders for urgent remittance of the initial Hajj deposit of N4.5m for the 2024 exercise into the Board’s account.

The board’s Secretary, Mr. Saheed Onipede, made the plea yesterday at a meeting between the management and the stakeholders in Ikeja.

Onipede stated that all hands must be on deck at ensuring that the state’s intending pilgrims make the payment in order to participate in the holy pilgrimage exercise and utilize the 3,517 slots allocated to the state by NAHCON. Read more

Solid Minerals: FG targets 50% contribution to GDP (Leadership)

The federal government has vowed to block leakages hindering the collection of accruable revenues in the solid minerals sector as well as achieving its target of 50 per cent contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the country.

The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) said it stood by merit, competence, due process and a level-playing ground for all contenders in the tussle over the emergence of the Iyaloja-General of Oyo State.

The CCII President-General, Niyi Ajewole, in a statement made available to journalists, yesterday, said that the CCII would not close its eyes while some people are fanning the ember of animosity that would disrupt the pleasant atmosphere of peace that Ibadan and Oyo State are enjoying.

Diddy accused of 1991 sexual assault of college student in new lawsuit (People)

Sean “Diddy” Combs is being accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed in the Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday. The allegations come just days after Diddy settled a different lawsuit accusing him of rape and abuse.

According to the court documents obtained by PEOPLE, a woman named Joi Dickerson-Neal is accusing Diddy, 54, of drugging and raping her when she was a college student at Syracuse University in 1991. Attorneys for Dickerson-Neal claim she was the victim of “revenge porn” after the music mogul allegedly recorded the incident and shared the tape with others in the music industry. Read more

As Israel pounds Gaza, BBC journalists accuse broadcaster of bias (AlJazeera)

London, United Kingdom – The BBC has been accused by its journalists of failing to tell the story of the Israel-Palestine conflict accurately, investing greater effort in humanising Israeli victims compared with Palestinians, and omitting key historical context in coverage.

In a 2,300-word letter written to Al Jazeera by eight UK-based journalists employed by the corporation, the BBC is also said to be guilty of a “double standard in how civilians are seen”, given that it is “unflinching” in its reporting of alleged Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

Fearing reprisal, the journalists requested anonymity. The group does not plan to send the letter to BBC executives, believing such a move was unlikely to lead to meaningful discussions. Read more

Gallagher was one of six headliners announced for next year’s edition of R+L earlier tonight (Thursday November 23), topping the bill alongside Lana Del Rey, Blink-182, Fred Again.., Gerry Cinnamon and Catfish & The Bottlemen, with Raye, Skrillex, Spiritbox and Digga D also confirmed to perform.

Pro-Palestine protesters disrupt Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (EW)

Pro-Palestine protesters temporarily interrupted Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday morning, donning white jumpsuits and appearing to glue themselves to the pavement to call attention to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

The protestors demonstrated along Sixth Avenue and held banners that read “Free Palestine” and “Liberation for Palestine and Planet,” according to footage captured by Fox 5 and Newsday, among other outlets. Their jumpsuits had “colonialism,” “capitalism,” and “racism” written on them.

The New York Police Department couldn’t confirm how many protesters were involved, but told EW that several individuals were taken into custody. Read more

After knife attack leaves 3 children injured, violent clashes break out in Dublin (PBS)

Violent clashes broke out in central Dublin on Thursday evening after a 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in a knife attack earlier in the day that also saw a woman and two other young children hospitalized.

Irish police said the girl was receiving emergency medical treatment in a Dublin hospital following the attack outside a school. Soon after that announcement, at least 100 people took to the streets, some armed with metal bars and covering their faces.

Police said over 400 officers, including many in riot gear, were deployed in Dublin city center to contain the unrest, which they said was “caused by a small group of thugs.” Read more 

China tells WHO it has no “unusual or novel diseases” amid spike in illness among children (Global)

Chinese officials say they did not detect any “unusual or novel diseases” in the country following a spike in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). 

The WHO had sought epidemiological and clinical information as well as laboratory results through the International Health Regulations mechanism.

As per the rule, China responded within 24 hours. Read more

Luton Town fined £120k and issued with action place after homophobic chanting at Brighton (Sky)

Luton have been fined £120k by the FA and issued with a two-year action plan after their fans’ homophobic chanting at Brighton on the opening day of the season.

The Hatters, promoted to the top flight for the first time in 31 years in May, have accepted the charge and said any fans identified will be banned by the club.

An FA Statement said: “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed an action plan and £120,000 fine on Luton Town for misconduct in relation to crowd control at their game against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday August 12 2023. Read more
