Women from Simerin Uba, Ikanmu and Oka communities in Akoko Southwest local government area have protested half naked over incessant attack by herders and continuous destruction of their farmlands.

A farmer in Uba, Mr. Sunday Ayeni, was killed last Sunday by suspected herders.

The villagers pointed fingers at herders who they claimed were not happy over the compensation they paid to Ayeni for destroying his crops. Read more

Health Minister Ali Pate says doctors and nurses trained in Nigeria are sought-after globally, and that 67% of them work in the United Kingdom (UK).

The minister, on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday, said if health workers of Nigerian origin pull out of the National Health Service (NHS), the service will struggle.

He spoke on the new National Policy on Health Workforce Migration approved by President Bola Tinubu to tackle the exodus of health workers from Nigeria in a phenomenon colloquially known as ‘Japa’. Read more

Ban: Lagos taskforce impounds 164 motorcycles (Vanguard)

Operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce, on Tuesday, carried out simultaneous enforcement against motorcycle operators, popularly called “okada” in some parts of the state over illegal operations.

At least 164 okadas were impounded during the sting operations.

The enforcement which lasted about six hours and carried out based on the instruction and directive of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP, Adegoke Fayoade, took place at: Badagry Expressway, Mile 2, Second Rainbow Bus Stop, V-Naija Bus Stop, Alabasuru and Berger Bus Stop where recalcitrant okada operators had carried on with their illegal activities. The Group Chief Branding and Communications Officer, DIL, Anthony Chiejina, in a statement titled: ‘We have not fixed fuel price,’ on Tuesday also said DIL has not authorized the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) to announce price for the expected Dangote fuel.

FG announces plan to establish women centres across states (DailyTrust)

The Director General of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development, Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, has announced plans to collaborate with UN Women and the Canadian High Commission, to establish resource centres for women in governance and decision-making across states.

Speaking at a two-day capacity training for Women Affairs Commissioners from all 36 states, Bashir explained that these centres will empower women to assume leadership roles, provide networking opportunities, and provide access to expertise, research, and best practices.

“Over the years, women have been trying to take their positions in political spaces, and with the establishment of these resource centres, we are strategizing to see how we can train women and prepare them effectively for the political space,” she stated. Read more

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Tuesday, disclosed that his administration is set to offer business-oriented youths in the state grants ranging from N500,000 to N10 million under the Ogun Youth Empowerment and Entrepreneurial Programme.

Abiodun stated that the grants will commence during the next phase of OGYES, which will soon be relaunched.

Police nab 62-year-old man with fake naira notes in Bauchi  (Leadership)

Operatives of the Bauchi State Police Command have arrested a 62-year-old man, Tahir Ahmed, for allegedly mass-producing fake naira notes in Bauchi.

LEADERSHIP gathered that Ahmed was arrested in possession of the alleged counterfeit naira notes amounting to over N200,000.

The suspect was arrested by the police after he reportedly used ritual to turn plain paper into new N1,000 notes while on board a commercial vehicle from Tilden-Fulani to Bauchi. Read more

Man charged with murder of 15-year-old girl who vanished in 2017 (People)

A Georgia man has been charged in the 2017 disappearance of a teen girl. 

On Monday, August 12, James Bachmurski, 65, from Emanuel County, Ga., was charged with second-degree murder for the death of 15-year-old Jade Marie Colvin, according to the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa.

Authorities allege that Colvin’s mother brought her to live on Bachmurski’s farm in spring 2017, but it is unclear why. She was reportedly last seen or heard from two days after her arrival. Read more

Girl attacked by black bear inside tent at Montana campsite (NBC)

A young girl was attacked in Montana by a black bear that has since been euthanized, authorities said.

The animal attacked the girl inside a tent about 10pm Sunday in a private campground south of Red Lodge in Carbon County, according to Chrissy Webb, a spokesperson for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Hospital services have been disrupted in several Indian cities after a doctors’ protest spread nationwide following the rape and murder of a trainee medic in the city of Kolkata, authorities and media reports said.

Thousands of doctors marched on Monday in Kolkata, capital of West Bengal state, and other cities in the state to denounce the killing at a government-run hospital, demanding justice for the victim and better security measures.

The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. An autopsy showed she was raped before being killed. Read more
