One dies, four injured in Ikoyi building collapse (Punch)

A two-storey building under construction at Glover Court, Ikoyi, Lagos State, collapsed on Friday, killing one person and injuring four labourers working at the site.

It was learnt that emergency officials were still clearing the rubble as of 9pm to know if there were more victims trapped therein.

City Round learnt that part of the structure suddenly collapsed around 4pm and trapped the workers.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the state’s ambulance and fire services responded to the distress call and rescued four workers alive. Read more

Lagos reiterates commitment to quality education (Nation)

The Lagos State government has reiterated its commitment to redefining delivery of quality education through partnering with stakeholders ultimately aimed to further improve the standard of education.

This was disclosed by the Lagos State Honourable Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo who was represented by the Director General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs Abiola Seriki – Ayeni at the 2019 Business of Education Summit with theme; Building a Sustainable Education Business – Opportunities and Key Drivers.

At the summit, the Honourable Commissioner stated the importance of private sector participation in the education sector for continuous socio-economic development in the state emphasizing that various reforms embarked on by the Lagos State Government in the education sector will positively turn the fortune of the sector around. FG team inspects flooded Lagos communities (Guardian)

The Federal Government, through the Ecological Fund Office, on Friday inspected areas affected by recent flooding in Kosofe area of Lagos State with a view to assisting the sacked communities.

Mr Ibrahim Lawal, who Led the Presidential Team for an on-the-spot assessment of the flooded communities, said that visit followed complaints by Sen. Bayo Osinowo, representing Lagos East in the Senate.

Fashionistas make statement at Heineken Lagos Fashion Week (Nation)

Between October 23 and October 26, 2019, every corner of the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, looked like a fashion runway as guests for the Heineken Lagos Fashion Week dazzled in stunning outfits.

The four-day event brought together many of the big names in fashion across Africa like Deola Sagoe, Adama Paris, Maki Oh, Mai Atafo, CLAN, Meena, Sisiano, Ugo Monye, Style Temple and Selly Raby Kane. For 20 minutes on different days, each designer owned the runway, using that time to show-off new collections for their brands.

While day 1 was reserved for the Fashion Business Series, day 2 saw the runway opened up by Orange Culture, which is run by Adebayo Oke-Lawal who has been designing since the age of 10. His display was followed by more showcases from Rick Dusi, Wuman, DZYN, Eki Silk, Idma Nof and Tokyo James. On day 3, Cynthia Abila, Bridget Awosika, Christie Brown, Nkwo and Meite Awa showcased elaborate African print styles while Andrea Iyamah brought her swimwear designs to the runway. Read more

Nwabueze faults Supreme Court validation of Buhari’s victory (Nation)

Renowned constitutional lawyer Prof Ben Nwabueze (SAN) on Wednesday faulted the Supreme Court judgment which validated President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in presidential election.

He said former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was denied fair hearing.

Nwabueze, in a statement, questioned the claim by Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Tanko Muhammad, that the panel of justices “examined all the briefs of argument and the exhibits for over two weeks and we have all agreed that there is no merit in this appeal”. Read more

I did not kill Kudus -declares teenager accused of killing SS1 student in Lagos (Vanguard)

October 18, 2019 was a day of horror for the Anifowoshes in particular and residents of Igbogbo community in Ikorodu area of Lagos. This was due to the discovery of the lifeless body of 14-year-old Kudus Anifowoshe, in an uncompleted building, located three buildings away from his parents’.

The Senior Secondary School 1 student of Icon Primary and Secondary School had gone missing four days before, with his whereabouts unknown, until his body which was in its decomposing state was discovered.

Further discovery revealed that his eyes, tongue, private parts and breast were missing, indicating that he could have been killed for ritual purpose. Read more

‘Village Headmaster’ celebrates 50 years, to come back on TV (Nation)

After several years of being off air, popular sitcom, ‘Village Headmaster’ is set to come back to the television screen . The programme celebrated its 50th anniversary on Monday with a play titled, ‘O Vacuum’, which was staged at Terrakulture, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The play saw some surviving cast of the old ‘Village Headmaster’ take to the stage with the new crop of actors of the sitcom. It was emotional as actors of yesteryear alongside a new crop of actors re-enacted the drama of ‘Oja Town’. Read more

A woman who was raped repeatedly by her dad from the age of six has said she wants to help others who have suffered sexual abuse. Shannon Clifton, now 19, suffered years of torment after moving in with her dad Shane Ray Clifton when she was five years old after her parents split up. The student, who grew up in Derby, was raped up to four times a day and, at the age of 13, gave birth to her father’s child. LaLiga has conducted an experiment to prove that all fans are united by a common factor that goes far beyond the feelings they have for each of their clubs: their passion for football.

Under the motto “When we feel together, we feel stronger,” the club association aimed to foster unity among all LaLiga Santander and LaLiga SmartBank fans. To this end, 42 supporters – one of each club – took part in a pioneering sound experiment in Spain: recording the rhythm of fans’ heartbeats to the tempo of the new LaLiga soundtrack, composed by Lucas Vidal.
