One dies in multiple accidents on Otedola Bridge —FRSC (Punch)

The Federal Road Safety Corps on Wednesday said that one person died in the multiple accidents that happened on Otedola Bridge in Lagos.

Speaking with our correspondent, Assistant Corp Commander, Ojota Command, Olusanjo Oluwatanmi, said four vehicles were involved in the accident, which had claimed one life, while another person has been rushed to the hospital.

He said, “This accident happened this morning around 8:40 a.m, involving four vehicles. There was a truck, a trailer so to say, Toyota Sienna bus, a luxury bus and Toyota Hilux van. Read more

66% of Lagosians cannot afford basic healthcare – Commissioner (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, said on Wednesday that at least 66 percent of people living in the state cannot afford basic healthcare as they are a step away from extreme poverty.

He said about N60 billion is required to rescue the people and provide healthcare for them under the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on his plans to reposition the state health sector, Abayomi regretted that only 33 percent of Lagosians can afford healthcare, adding that the situation has affected the smooth take-off of the state health insurance scheme. Read more

Nigeria, Russia sign MoU on Rail Modernisation, Infrastructure Rehabilitation (ThisDay)

Nigeria, Wednesday in Sochi, Russia, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Russia for the modernisation, development of railway infrastructure, rehabilitation of the existing Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) rolling stock-fleet and upgrading of workshops across the country.

The MoU involves two Russian firms: Russian Joint Stock Company Russian Railway (JSCRR) and Transmash Holding, a private rolling stock manufacturing company.

Signing the agreement on behalf of the Nigerian government, Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, stated that the move was to boost and fastrack the construction of the rail manufacturing company at Kajola, Ogun state. Read more

Rivers serial killer pleads guilty for killing 9 women, asks for forgiveness (DailyTrust)

The suspected serial killer arrested by Rivers State Police Command, Gracious David West has pleaded guilty and asked for forgiveness when he was arraigned before the State High Court. The State Police Command, in suit number PHC/3426/CR/2019, a case between the accused person and the Inspector General of Police, yesterday, arraigned the accused person on ten-count charges including conspiracy and murder.

From the charges read: “West was alleged to have unlawfully killed several women in different hotels and guest houses in parts of Rivers State, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 319 sub 1, Cap 37. volume 2 laws of Rivers State 1999.” Read more

Court to hear N200m suit against Tiwa Savage, Don Jazzy’s record label Nov 5 (ThisDay)

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed Nov. 5 for hearing in a suit filed by a Nigerian Musician, Olumuyiwa Danladi a.k.a Danny Young, against fellow Music star, Tiwatope Savage, over alleged copyright infringement.

In the suit, labelled FHC/L/CS/230/2019 and pending before Justice Mohammed Liman, Young is claiming N205 million in damages against Savage for allegedly, using his Musical work titled ‘ONE’ without lawful authority.

Also joined in the suit is Marvin Records, a Nigerian record label, founded by record artist, Don Jazzy, on May 8, 2012.

The ‘Omo Lepa’ hit singer filed the suit through his counsel, Mr Justin Ige, of Creative Legal, claiming the sum of N200 million in damages against the defendants for copyright violation. Read more

Man arrested for sodomizing own son to death (Vanguard)

Police in Kenya has arrested a 25-year-old man identified as Muchiri Derick from Maara Sub-County for allegedly sodomizing his baby boy aged one and half years to death.

During an interview with the journalists in her office, the Tharaka-Nithi Commissioner Ms Opwora Beverly on Wednesday confirmed the boy’s death on arrival at Mutunguni hospital where his parents rushed him on Monday morning.

Medical doctors found out that the baby boy had severe injuries on the anus,’ she said. Read more

Border Closure: We are crippled by Nigeria’s restriction ― Niger traders (Vanguard)

Republic of the Niger traders have lamented the effect of Nigeria’s borders closure on their business performance, saying they are angry at the decision of Nigeria’s federal government.

Traders from Niger until now freely moved their trucks, heavily loaded with goods into Nigeria. When the border was closed, trucks already prepared for Nigeria were forced to offload as they were being stopped at the border.

Republic of the Niger is one of the four countries Nigeria shared a land border with. Other countries include the Republic of Benin in the west; and Chad and Cameroon in the east.

Plane load of passengers held on runway after being hit by hit by diarrhoea (Metro)

A diarrhoea outbreak at a five-star TUI resort has left ‘hundreds’ queuing to see a hotel doctor and a plane load of passengers detained on the runway, guests have claimed.

Jody Black said she spent most of her holiday this week confined to the toilet in her bedroom.

She claimed ‘hundreds of guests’ at Hotel Riu Touareg in Cape Verde were waiting to record themselves as sick with the TUI rep at the hotel.

While another guest said paramedics boarded her return flight at Manchester Airport earlier this month to begin immediate checks on sick guests. Read more

Turkey Syria offensive: Trump lifts Turkey sanctions after deal (BBC)

The US is lifting sanctions on Turkey after its recent offensive against Kurdish fighters in north-eastern Syria, President Donald Trump says.

His decision came after Russia agreed with Turkey to use troops to extend a ceasefire along the Syrian border.

Frustrated NPFL stars lament late season kick off (Nation)

Stars in the local league have expressed huge disappointment at the late start of the 2019/20 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season which has now been fixed for November 3.

Female players to go on strike in Spain over pay and conditions (Guardian)

Almost 200 female footballers in Spain from various first division clubs have voted to go on strike over pay and working conditions.

The vote late Tuesday won the support of 93 per cent of 188 players from 16 clubs after more than a year of failed negotiations with the Association of Women’s Football Clubs (ACFF).

Clubs are proposing part-time salaries worth 8,000 euros a year while the players are demanding a minimum of 12,000, amounting to 75 per cent of minimum full-time contracts. Read more

More injury concern for Man City, as Rodri limps out in Atalanta win (Vanguard)

Rodri was substituted with what appeared to be a hamstring injury in the first half of Manchester City’s Champions League tie against Atalanta, as the Premier League champions’ injury problems mounted.
