There was a mild drama in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, on Tuesday, as some women marched to the office of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) over what they described as their inability to have conjugal relationship with their husbands due to heat.

Armed with placards with inscriptions such as ‘No Light, No Payment’, ‘The Heat is too much’, etc, they lamented the untold hardship they were passing through.

The protesting women said their husbands no longer touch them at night due to heat, lamenting their inability to preserve cooked foods for weeks as a result of power outage. Read more

The Federal Government has expressed worry over the rising prices of food and commodities in the country, which led to protests in Niger and Kano, respectively.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun spoke during a bilateral meeting with a visiting German delegation, led by the country’s Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Ms Svenja Shulze in Abuja on Monday.

Edun said the situation, which had produced growing discontent among the citizenry, was triggered by demand and supply forces. Read more 

NSCDC arrests 25-year-old for alleged theft of 4 tricycles (Vanguard)

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has arrested a 25-year-old man for alleged theft of four tricycles in Hadejia Local Government Area.

In a statement on Tuesday in Duste, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Badruddeen Tijjani, said that NSCDC operatives arrested one Abdullahi Idris for theft of the tricycles on Friday.

“Idris was arrested in Chadi Quarters, Hadejia, about 1700 hours following a complaint to NSCDC operatives in Hadejia. Read more

Kenyan police arrests prime suspect in Nairobi gas explosion (AlJazeera)

Kenyan police on Tuesday said they had arrested the main suspect in a deadly gas blast that triggered a huge fireball in a densely populated area of Nairobi last week.

Six people died in the disaster and around 280 others were injured when a truck loaded with gas canisters exploded in the Embakasi neighbourhood of the city, late Thursday.
